Great minds and all that. Its hard to find any other reason to be hanging around at a park to take pictures of other people’s children playing without their consent.
Yes, it is a policy organization, but it does rely on science for it’s understanding. But you are correct that policy is it’s function. But also consider that policy necessarily lags on science. Research is conducted, some study is published, more data is collected and that study is evaluated by the medical community at large. Then conclusions can be drawn to structure policy.
Don’t lay all that on Dr. Fauci. Yes, he was a little slow on the mask thing, but that was primarily because he was considering just the N95 masks, and when it became clear that any mask provides some protection, he reversed position.
Also, culturally we haven’t had the same problems with previous coronavirus infections that hit Asia, so we haven’t adopted the mask wearing as a general practice during infections. It remains to be seen if Covid19 will change that, but I don’t think we will go the route that, say, South Korea has with respect to masks as a general trend. The Freedumb folks are fighting tooth and nail any efforts to make voluntary masking culturally acceptable.
Yes, they were backing masks for specific control, not general widespread use. Then it became clear that asymptomatic spread was significant and cloth masks were acceptable. Change policy to fit the science.

Quite right: there is no logical or reasonable way the gun lobby could spin this horrific event as an excuse to sell more guns. The mother would have had no way to keep her son safe from the bullets fired by the sub-human, even if she’d had a hundred guns filling up her car.
But of course that won’t stop the gun lobby from making their ugly and inane sales pitches.
Perhaps if the hundreds of guns were stacked all around the child, like a sort of shield…

I’ve read and seen a fair number of murder mysteries, but I can’t recall any where the motive for the murder was as stupid as “argued over wearing a mask.”

So this issue about a mask-related shooting is probably more of a problem based on American gun culture rather than anything to do with masking. Pretty much any trivial disagreement can lead to a shooting
In Elmore Leonard’s Split Images, a homicide cop runs through his mental list of all the trivial reasons people in his investigations have killed each other. (I can’t find it quoted online.) If he wrote it today I’m sure mask wearing would be on the list.

An observation about @Biotop’s cited event.
The off-duty deputy, presumably the better-trained firearm operator of the two, came off worse in the exchange. And although his gun was effective at stopping the bad guy, it was ineffective at stopping the bad guy’s bullets coming the other way. Or at least the first couple.
Something for all the 2A-enthusiast armed “law-abiding citizens” to consider as they contemplate what they’d have done in that situation. Deciding to engage is deciding to be a target for sure, not just for maybe.
