Have You Gotten Any Hostility For Wearing (Or Not Wearing) A Mask?

Seems to be a thing lately: shouting matches, fisticuffs, even assault over people wearing or not wearing masks. Fortunately, I’ve not gotten so much as side-eye for wearing mine, and I live in Trump’s back yard.

What about you, fellow Doper?

I wear a mask and have gotten no negative comments. People seem to recognize it as the sensible thing to do.

I wear a mask when needed (inside stores, when I can’t socially distance outside), so no issues. Where I live you’d never get crap for wearing it, but you might get some guff for not wearing it.

So one time about 8 weeks ago I popped into the grocery store without a mask, I think the mask order in my state had just gone into effect. On my way out this fiesty short, old lady looked me squarely in the eye and with malice called me a fool. Her eyes were blazing and she was almost shaking with rage, I think she spit in her own mask. Yi I didn’t forget next time. Lol thanks GMa

People are really compliant here (Hawai’i Island, aka Big Island, not to be confused with Oahu which is where Honolulu and Waikiki are). Mask wearing is mandatory, but people were behaving well even before that decree. I have not seen anyone mask-less so I don’t know what the reaction would be if anyone tried to flout the rule.

The closest I’ve encountered was when I stopped for gas at the Safeway gas station after shopping. I’d returned to my car and removed the mask as soon as I was inside. It didn’t occur to me to re-mask since I wouldn’t be within 6 feet of anyone while pumping my gas. Turns out there was an attendant who, when I got out of the car without wearing it, politely said, “ma’am, do you have a mask? I can provide you one if you don’t have yours.” Mine was right there in my car so I apologized and put it on.

We’ve had a very low infection rate here - part of that is of course the protection that an island offers, but that infamous Princess cruise ship actually docked in our harbor and all the passengers wandered through town before they went off to California, so we had early exposure. But people here have excellent community spirit.

I’ll probably jinx today’s Covid report by saying this, but we’ve had no active cases on island for several days now. Yay, us.

We’ve had zero issues. I wear a mask wherever it’s someone’s “rule” but not elsewhere and so far no problems either way.

My wife has gotten a few snide remarks (she can’t wear a mask), but nothing overtly hostile. My response is “CDC guidelines – if you don’t like it, complain to them.”

The media makes it sound like it happens everywhere and all the time. But that’s their job, to sensationalize issues. Otherwise people wouldn’t tune in to see normal civilization, they want to see it breaking down.

It’s mandatory here in California, and at least in LA people have been complying. I haven’t seen or heard about any confrontations.

My wife and I went on a backpacking trip in remote Idaho. We had to stop in one of the “larger” towns on the way to get something we forgot. It was a fairly busy small grocery store and I was the only one wearing a mask (wife stayed in the car) and I definitely felt people looking at me. One guy walked by and said “nice mask”. Now, there aren’t many reported cases in this very large county (Idaho County), but it was still an odd experience.

Apart from the occasional “I like your mask” I’ve never received comments about wearing it.

I guess I should state the “nice mask” I received was not a compliment.

Fauci’s “rule” is to wear a mask whenever you’re inside a public establishment or can’t socially distance outside. Is that the “rule” you’re talking about?

If she can’t wear a mask, I assume she’s staying away from people and not going into stores unless it is absolutely necessary. Like, maybe your leg is broken and she needs to get a splint? Because you can wear a mask and you both can order for curbside pickup or home delivery, so I wonder why she would be in a position where she need to be in a place that requires a mask, since she can’t wear one.

Can you elaborate on those situations where she has to be someplace that requires a mask? Thanks!

“Be glad you can’t see what’s under it.” would be the baffling response.

“Thanks. I’m dying of cancer, so my immune system is compromised. I’m happy that one of the last things I’ll get to experience is this interaction. Thank you and God bless you, kind sir. Praise Jesus.”

If an establishment has a “rule” you must wear a mask in there then I wear a mask. Otherwise I don’t.

I’m in NYC so of course I have not seen any hostility towards wearing a mask. Everyone indoors (and most people when outside as well) wears a mask. We take it seriously here and the results speak for themselves.

Any time she wants to. You’re welcome.

End of discussion.

This is a rude, crude and obnoxious response. And I am so stealing it!

I wear my mask and haven’t gotten any hostility, then again I pay little attention to others and they might all be sneering at me.

Then again, at work, where I require people wear a mask (and wear it correctly) or else they are told to leave, I get about one maskhole a week who argues or wants to discuss masks. I’m sooo done discussing it, I just throw them out (figuratively).
