It is said that one shouldn’t speak ill of the recently passed; that, in such moments, one should show compassion, regardless of how the deceased may have been perceived.
I’ll have to dispense with that nicety here, and hope that Cirsten (sic) will end up awash in a cocoon of fire ants in hell.
I actually encountered my first “I have a medical exemption” person today. In a liquor store. She came in and was promptly given a mask by a cashier and tried out the line, but the cashier said, “I don’t care, either wear it or leave.” She put it on and scuttled off to grab her vodka. I commiserated with the cashier.
I suspect I haven’t seen this before because I really don’t go out much anymore.
It’s a weird, fucked-up love at that. They think support for Israel will lead to Armageddon and that Jews at that point will need to convert to Christianity or suffer eternal damnation.
I’ve seen a few staff at various places with an “I am exempt from wearing a mask” badge. I have not pushed any of them for further details or evidence, as they’ve all been polite and professional and haven’t, you know, coughed on me or anything. And I remain masked.
FYI, those badges don’t mean jack shit legally-They can be bought on Etsy for under five bucks. Lying to customers is neither polite nor is it professional.
I think I’ve seen about four of them total in London, and only on individuals in places where the rest of the staff have been masked, so it’s not the employers that were driving it. I don’t know what if any evidence the staff members in question had to provide to their employers to justify their exemption. And I wasn’t suggesting they had any legal status; they were clearly worn for explanatory purposes.
The fact remains-Neither badge nor card (legit or otherwise) stops a person from contracting and/or spreading this horrible disease. If people wearing those badges are that rare, what you should do is frequent establishments that do not employ people that wear those badges. People that are exempt from the vaccine and/or wearing masks should NOT be exempt from their personal responsibility for the safety of others.
Yeah, if someone has a genuine medical reason for being unable to wear a mask, the only reasonable accommodations in my view would be to have them work from home, or in a solitary position away from customers and coworkers.
In no way is it reasonable to exempt them from wearing ask in a customer facing job. I would avoid that establishment in the future.
On Friday, corporate sent out an email reiterating their mask policy; in particular, that only unvaccinated people are required to wear masks, and that these masks – to be worn over the mouth and nose – should be of a thick enough material to block light. Exemptions are made for those see-through masks designed to help lip readers. (Vaccination status is tracked through an online portal, where employees can upload a scan of their vaccination card.)
This announcement caused literal screaming to erupt throughout the facility, with one guy particularly upset that his “clever” way of bypassing the existing rule for our location (“it only says you have to wear a face covering, it doesn’t say how you have to wear it!”) would be overridden by corporate, meaning that his current method of wearing his company-issued face shield upside down on his head like a crown is no longer acceptable. This guy then tried to pick a fight with his supervisor, who is also anti-mask. The last I heard, he’s threatening to bring in supplies to build walls around his workstation so he can work unmasked.
Some GOP-led states - Iowa for sure - have actually passed laws specifically providing unemployment benefits for those who are fired because they refuse to comply with their employers’ vaccination requirements.
Iowa’s fine, upstanding, level-headed Republicans used a special session intended only for redistricting to slip that through. They also included a provision saying those claiming religious or medical exemptions don’t need any evidence - employers must take them at their word. “Oh, my religion doesn’t allow me to take the COVID vaccine” is adequate “proof” for an exemption.
Republicans: Biden has failed in his promise to rein in this pandemic!
Also Republicans: We will do everything we can, special sessions, lawsuits all the way to the Supreme Court, lie about effectiveness of the vaccine, everything and anything in order to prolong this pandemic!
That’ll last until he gets the pricing on Plexiglass – $140 for a 4x8x1/8 sheet at Home Depot. Then there’s the cutting, chamfering, and hardware bits for installation.
