I believe that Kinoons brought up “intelligent enough to do a job.” His job may not be teaching grammar, but at least he is not a self-righetous moron such as yourself. I say moron because even though you have the ability to point out minor flaws to other people, you have the inability to stay on the topic of a post. I’d better stop now, lest you grade my post also.
Since when is basic usage…awww, fuck it. But when Arafat is sitting across from President Dubbya with a puzzled look on his face, remember that it’s people who don’t give a shit who got us there.
For those of you who think that Kinoons is the hurt party here because of my insistence that basic language usage is part of being taken seriously, here is one of Kinoons’ own posts from the Ted Neugent thread:
**Okay, I’ll give that the United States has no official language, but the commonly accepted language is English.
Hea Oldscratch, yeah you, If you ever meet someone who does not speak English in this country, then unless they just got off the boat, their ignorance tells me that they don’t want to learn English. Don’t give me any shit that this doesn’t happen. I work at a fire department in a small city in New Mexico, I run into patients all the time that don’t speak English, and they get angry when I cannot speak Spanish. If you are going to come to The US, why not learn the commonly accepted language.
Also, I was just in Belgium a month ago. I am aware that there is a very small section on the Eastern edge of the country that speak German. Hell, I speak German. Also, don’t dream to try and tell me that the French speaking population and the Dutch speaking population coexist w/o any discontent. Many of the Dutch speaking people I met looked down on their French speaking counterparts, the French the same of the Dutch.
Third, the message is a valid one. Again, it was not the most tactful way to give the message, but if you move to the US I expect some effort to learn English. If I were to move to Belgium I would make every effort to learn Dutch, French, and to improve my German. The vast majority of the population in Belgium do speak English, but that makes no difference. I should learn the other languages just to fit in. On our way to Belgium we stayed in Frankfurt. Again, sense I can speak some basic German, I made every effort to speak in German to anyone outside of my group. I could tell that the effort was appreciated.
Oh, and its late; I’m tired, so indulge me please. What the hell is…
“It’s about as valid as suggesting we start pogroms against
the Hmong”
Pogroms? Hmong? I’m not familiar with those words. See, even I am still learning English.
You may wonder why I chose to learn German instead of Spanish, living in New Mexico. My family also migrated to the US 4 generations ago. My mother’s family spoke German, my father’s Finnish. My grandmother spoke both fluent Finnish and English. I chose to learn German as part of my family’s culture. No one should expect for their language to die. They can contact others that speak their same language, but it’s plain irresponsible to not make an attempt to learn English.**
Obviously, for most of you, this kind of screed only applies to non-native speakers and not to yourselves. If you can’t spell, if you can’t write coherently, if you can’t use the language even closely to properly, then you open yourselves up to criticism and “nit-picking” from those who can. We all live in glass houses; I’m just glad that my glass house is only attacked by the anti-intellectual, “we don’t need no education” crowd of fry-cook wannabes who populate the majority of the internet.
stofsky, I’m going to say this once and only once, so you better listen the hell up.
Shut up, and drop it. Back away from Kinoons, from Oldscratch, from AuntiePam, and from John, and shut the hell up.
You’re on a short, hard road, one that you don’t want to be on. You only have 13 posts, so there’s still time for redemption, but you better take my advice.
<taking calm breath> I'm going to try to say calm now. I realise this is the pit, and I should pop off this large flame that would cause myself to contiune through a post overlooking some keys on the keyboard that would take time, but not add to the meaning of the post.
“Obviously, for most of you, this kind of screed only applies to non-native speakers and not to yourselves”
screed? Through the use of the context I believe you mean creed. It would appear you are not as perfect as you would like everyone else to be.
Also it is apparent you need to retake that reading comprhension class you failed in mid-school. If you would like to reread that post from the Nugent topic you would see that I said, quote, “but if you move to the US I expect some effort to learn English.” Thats right, some effort. I didn’t say that I expect college profeciny, just an effort.
so, here’s your bookbag, off you pop; back to school with you.
The hmong sided, pretty much as a group, with the South and the U.S. and suffered reprisals for that support. Many have fled to the U.S. where their tribalculture and apparent lack of sophistication have hindered their assimilation (they do not mix well with the Saigon and Delta refugees who view them, somewhat, as “hillbillies,” and their cultural views of the world do not mesh well with the secular/scientific views of the rest of American society.
Regarding Spanish in New Mexico:
That state actually does have two official languages. (Of course, a resident knows that.) The reason? Unlike Texas and California, where the Mexicans were pretty well overwhelmed by the anglo invasions, in New Mexico the anglos arrived in small enough numbers (initially) that the Mexican landowners were able to hold their own with the newer immigrants and were not forced to be assimilated or disappear.
They used their (pre-existing) numbers to maintain a semblance of political power and culture. New Mexico does not in any way represent people who have “come to The US,” and chosen to “not learn the commonly accepted language.” Those speakers of Spanish often have ancestors who were in (what is now) New Mexico before the ancestors of 90% of the English-speaking people in the U.S. left Europe or Asia.
An employer can ask you to take a physical or ask questions as long as they don’t get caught I suppose. I personally am protected by the ADA, but I would never take away a “light duty” job from someone who was already at a factory job. That just isn’t right.
Thanks, Zette. I’m getting ready to go on vacation for a week, so don’t have time to look it over thoroughly – but that link looks like it could be useful. Appreciate it.
