Ah. I missed the part about being on concrete. I’m usually walking in fields; and have often had trouble spotting killdeer nests in order to avoid stepping on or driving over them, because the adults are trying so hard to divert my attention anywhere else.
The chicks were there, my neighbour had seen them just five minutes earlier, all five of them. But yeah, they’re extraordinarily smart and protective critters, credit where credit is due.
Goon in a box,
But as Marcel Lucont has waxed lyrical in the poem - “Wine In A Can”
“Fruit on a pizza
Sandals with socks
I thought we’d hit bottom
With wine in a box.
But to add to the list of a cultural ban
Just above Nazi banners
Should be wine in a can.”
… and FWLIW, @kambuckta is chromosomally XX
Yes, yes I am (female) for what it’s worth.
And not all goon is created equal. ![]()
I have little to say of “goon” except that it is banned at the electronic dance festivals I attend (that is, “papsak”, the African cousin of “goon”), but I do have a suggestion for plovers:
A butterfly net, and a recipe.
apparently they were a good 30’ away on the lawns and out of my field of vision.
Still don’t understand how you know how far away they were, without being able to see the “target”.
Lived in Texas for years. Mockingbird mamas will dive-bomb the HELL outta anyone who comes near their nests … and they like to nest near people-places (humans being a deterrent to many predators) so there’s often an, ah, yeah, conflict of interest there.
I just love convenient single-serving packaging, don’t you? ![]()
