Yup, very true. I actually regret spending money to legally purchase the DRM-ridden ‘Spore’ instead of getting the pirated cleaned-up version. You can guess how this might effect how I choose to obtain GTA IV when it comes out for the PC in a few days.

I might have bought Spore but after reading about the DRM I’ve found other things to occupy my time. I don’t want to support that sort of DRM if I can help it.

I would buy GTA IV and then install the pirated version instead, except I was really looking forward to multiplayer on the PC. What happened to you RockStar, you used to be cool!

Funny thats never happened once in about 12 years. If you dont want trojans or spyware the thing you need to stay away from is porn.

What?!?! In what way is porn an issue. With porn you never need to run an executable and are essentially free from any invasive software when you stick to streaming video and know video file types. The most dangerous thing you’ll see on a porn site is pop-up ads and tracking cookies.

GTA IV is available on Steam right now.

I’ve not had problems with SecuRom so far (crosses fingers), but after hearing about the issues other have had, I’ll buy my games off of Steam whenever I can. Not only are they DRM free, but they don’t require a cd.

Just because you get a game from Steam doesn’t mean there’s no DRM. From this FAQ file:

**Is this game going to be available on Steam? And if you are using SecuROM on the retail version, will it also be a part of the any version distributed digitally? Either via Steam or other?

All versions of the game will use SecuROM functionality. Steam will requires an extra layer of code to purchase and buy the game via Steam. Since Steam requires a login it will not have install limits that some other Digital Download copies will.

DRM is there to prevent second hand sales, not piracy.

Then it’s still completely worthless. Chinese black-marketeers aren’t even slowed down by DRM. (Do they even bother to crack it? There’s no reason for them to.)

Rockstar says that all versions of the game will feature SecuROM, including digital versions online.

You do realize that console companies are now trying everything to not only prevent piracy, but specially to prevent second hand sale of games, right?

Been hearing this for five years or more. No sign of it yet.

No such luck: The system you want can’t be made because DRM is always going to be cracked.

FWIW, nobody has cracked the PS3 yet, and doubtlessly not for lack of trying.

Porn websites are full of trojans and spyware links, banner ads, fake files, etc. Its not the actual porn you need to worry about about but every computer i’ve ever seen thats been used for casual porn browsing by unexperienced users has become completely infested with every kind of trojan and malware out there.
