First of all, there’s nothing in the article identifying the religious beliefs or religious affiliation of anyone involved.
Secondly, I can sort of see the mayor’s point. Certainly you can see the potential ethical problems about a city accepting money from someone they’re suing.
The linked article doesn’t say anything about religion that I can see. And while I think anyone should be allowed to donate, this seems like a publicity stunt on the part of Cornetta. There is no way Cornetta could not have known his donation would be controversial, right or wrong. If he was truly concerned about giving to a worthy cause, he could have donated anonymously or given indirectly somehow. It seems to me that he was more interested in making a point.
If it’s being done specifically to make the recipient of the donation look bad, then I would disagree. And again, this is not passing judgment on whether Cornetta is in the right for doing so. I’ve glanced over some of the documents of the Federal civil suit (shoot me now?), and I can’t make that call. I will say, however, that the whole point of the suit seems to be that Fulton County hasn’t (and won’t, unless they lose the suit) grant him a business license to operate, so who knows if they’re collecting taxes from him?
This has been a long going issue between the very new and upscale town of John’s Creek and the owner of The Love Shack, a chain of adult novelty stores throughout Atlanta.
I for one am tickled to see Cornetta doing this as it is making the people who run John’s Creek look even more foolish than they already are in trying to shut him down.
Fair enough. Fundy was probably not the best choice of words, but that came to mind when picturing the Mayoral gasbag finger wagging about keeping their pure lil Bible belt town free of evil influences.
