Furry Whippet?

I’m considering getting a dog. I like the Greyhound, thin with a large chest, look and my mom recommended a Whippet as they are a smaller dog and would seem to be okay for apartment living (assuming you walk them once a day.)

I’m wondering if there are any dogs that are similar to a Whippet but a bit more proof against the cold? Certainly I could just buy a coat for the guy, but those don’t much cover the hindlegs nor head. Getting a dog who was a bit more cold-weather specific would be better.

please DON’T get a whippet. They are a coursing dog and love to run. Get a lap rat that will sit around like a lump of fur. Also - dogs have to go more than once a day, don’t you?

No idea. Both sites that I’ve seen which comment on apartments say they’re alright with apartment life. And yes, I’m aware that you would need to take a dog out several times a day to potty.

If there’s better though, that’s what I’m asking for.

My best friend had a whippet for 14 years. He just recently died (and now resides in my yard :() She’d take him out for runs periodically, but he was perfectly content living indoors. He was morbidly attached to her. She could barely go to the bathroom without him going through separation anxiety.

He wore clothes to cope with the Chicago winters. Coat and two pair of shoes. I don’t know of a long-haired breed. He was a wonderful companion. Good choice!

Salukis and Afghan Hounds are both sight hounds with more hair, although they’re pretty large dogs, too. For the short while (6 mo) we lived in an apartment with 5 people and my Afghan and he did just fine there. They are coursers, which means they like to put on short-lived bursts of speed. Then they veg out the other 23 hours and 45 minutes a day. Taking one to an inclosed tennis court and playing chase will usually suffice.

Oh - I forgot. Do a search on "Silken Windhounds’ These are recently developed smaller hybrid sighthounds with hair. I’ve never actually seen one live and in person, but I’ve come across the name on the internet.

I can’t comment on finding a furry Whippet, but I do own a greyhound, and you are right, greyhounds and whippets LOVE to sleep A LOT and should be fine for an apartment. The like running in short bursts but are easily tired and are famous for loving to lie around, sleep, and get petted. (Of course you realize you’re going to have to take the dog out more than once a day folr potty breaks, same for any dog!!)

You may want to look into Italian Greyhounds. They, like the whippets, are sweet and devoted and have a similar build (albeit smaller) to the greyhound. They make for good indoor companions. My brother and sister-in-law have two and they can’t say enough great things about them.

But, of course, they too need outerwear in the rain in cold.
