What a fucked-up couple of days at work, all because I can’t fucking sleep. A double-dose, 50mg, of dioxylamine succinate (I hope I spelled that right, because this small print on the bottle is fucking impossible to read - I’m only 49, how do these 80+ year old people do it?). Double dose of diphenhydramine, same lack of effect. 5-10mg of melatonin? I may as well be drinking water.
Have you ever been so tired that you can’t even eat? I’m a damned professional cook - that’s my job, and I couldn’t even make myself something to eat (after feeding my customers). And of course, that didn’t help matters. I’m not even diabetic, but I can recognize that not eating for three days in a row is going to seriously lower my blood sugar and reduce my energy. And, unfortunately, I drink sugar-free energy drinks as well.
Fortunately, today, I ate. I realized that, after three days of not eating, it would be a bad idea to eat a big meal all at once. So early on at work, I ate two strips of bacon. Then I ate half of a biscuit with some gravy on it. A bit later I ate three small pieces of fruit, each about 1-inch square. A chunk of cantaloupe and two chunks of pineapple. When it finally came time for my lunch break, I felt ready for a “big” meal, but it still wasn’t all that big. I cooked Swiss Steak for my residents at the retirement home, so for my lunch I had two of them (about 6 ounces of meat) and some mashed potatoes. Oh my, about 30 minutes later I felt so much better. On my way home I stopped at Safeway and bought a jar of peanut butter, and an hour later I made myself a PB&J sandwich, and felt even better afterwards.
So I am going to make sure I can damn well sleep tonight. I’m going to drink myself into a stupor, because that always works. And I can fucking well work with a hangover, because I will have had at least 7-8 hours of sleep, instead of taking two OTK sleeping pills and then laying in bed awake for most of the next 8 hours.
(And, yes, OTK pills. I know good and well to not combine prescription sleeping pills with alcohol.)
