Futurama: Lrrreconcilable Ndndifferences (8/26)

hee hee. The standoff was at ‘white planes, NY’
Which had a bunch of white planes floating around.

Perhaps I’m easily amused…

Ah, but when those shows were originally broadcast, the speed of light was at its original rate.

Fry was in the shower working on his comic book again:

LizardGuy “Say goodbye to your forehead because I’m going to shoot you in it.”
DeliveryBoyMan “Not if I leap in front of your deathray, and i AM going to do that.”
(Leaps in front of deathray)
LG “I didn’t shoot yet , as usual your delivery arrived too soon”
(meteor comes in through window and crushes LG)
Leela “Oh, DeliveryBoyMan, you saved me by random chance.”
DBM “Don’t thank random-chance. Thank my meteor-wishing power…with your lips.”
(Back in real life)
(Leela kisses Fry’s cheek)
Leela “Good ending…not great.”

For the sake of sheer pedantry, when the speed of light was increased, the TV signals would have travelled faster at that point, meaning they still would have arrived earlier than after 1000 years.

Yes, I have no life.

If I ever dress up for a comic convention, I now know what costume I’m going to wear. I’ll dress as Bender dressed as Leela.

I don’t remember hearing her name at all before. Do you happen to remember which episode it might have been?

In my head, I’ve been pronouncing it “NUD-NUD” (for lack of any more precise description).

Erth.

I’m pretty sure her name was said in every episode she appeared in previously. They were “When Aliens Attack,” The Problem With Popplers," “Spanish Fry,” “Anthology of Interest II,” and “Love and Rockets.” She was also in “The Beast With A Billion Backs.” And I clearly recall her name as being pronounced “In-dunh-duh” in these earlier episodes.

Lots of great gags in this episode. Great cameo of Sergio Aragones critiquing Fry’s comic book. “It stinks. But I do love the little doodles you drew in the margins.”

I liked the Mork & Mindy callback when Fry calls Orson Welles. “Dork calling Orson. Dork calling Orson.”

The sign at the Head Museum: “Cheech and Chong now on sale in our Head Shop.”

And did anyone catch Frank Welker’s head on the shelf above Orson Welles’s?

It has been said on a few occassions, the one that I can think of off the top of my head without research is from “Spanish Fry”. Recalling Jackie Gleason, Lrrr says, “One of these days, Ndhndh, BANG! ZOOM! Straight to the Third Moon of Omicron Persei 8!!!”

Orson also introduced himself as “celebrated Paul Masson wine spokesman” or some such. That was a reference to this commercial that he showed up drunk to.

Also the line about Zapp Brannigan being disgusted by taking direction came from this voice-over session by William Shatner, where he torments a producer who dared to make a suggestion abut how he should read.

Yes but these were old TV signals. They go under the speed limit and have their turn signals on constantly.

Cheech and Chong
on sale in the head shop

Pssst. Post #28.

Actually, this is one of my complaints about Futurama. Their cultural references are often 20 or 30 years out of date.

ETA: The Cheech and Chong thing is another example. And Sergio Aragones for that matter.

There was an iPhone out 20 years ago?

Better something well-established with some substance to it rather than, say references to something current that will be forgotten by next season.

Like Ally McBeal?

At the time of “When Aliens Attack”, Ally McBeal had been on for two years and would run for three more. How current do you want your references? South Park has overdone it a bit, referencing flash-in-the-pan celebrities and such, and it would be a shame for the new Futurama episodes to follow suit.

My question goes to Ally McBeal being “of substance.”

Warner Brothers cartoons were constantly referencing then-current catch phrases and celebrities, and everybody still loves those.

Sergio Aragones has had an influence on MAD readers for almost 50 years. He’s an institution. I was enjoying his “Drawn Out Dramas” and larger format sketches since I was in elementary school. As for Cheech and Chong, they reunited and went on tour and have a couple of new projects in the works. I’d give Futurama a pass on mentioning them, too.
