Reminds me of Rocky & Bullwinkle. It was full of references I didn’t understand as a little kid, but it was still fun to watch, and it just got better over time.
Futurama has a range of references crossing generations. There’s usually something there for everybody.
But not enough Bender. All the best shows, and movies, are about Bender, not the meatbags.
I’m 22. I know who Sergio Aragones is and got the Cheech and Chong immediately, but what really made me laugh was Orson Welles’s head being directly beneath Frank Welker at the head museum.
I’m pretty sure that some of my Futurama watching peers wouldn’t know Aragones, but they’re not going to feel like the writers are out of touch. Especially not with the Comic Con setting of most of the episode.
Sergio Aragones and Cheech and Chong may not be as famous in 2010 as Katy Perry is. But I bet more people will recognize their names in 2020 than will recognize Katy Perry’s.
Try going back ten years. How are those N’Sync and Spice Girls jokes holding up? No doubt they’re as fresh as the day they were written.
Ah, so then the only worthwhile cultural touchstones are ones from 30 years ago? There’s nothing going on today that should be satirized? Or if there is, we have to wait 30 years to make jokes about it? (You know, just to be sure.) :dubious:
