G3

I went to see G3 last night. What a great show.

There was an opening band who were ok. They played for a bit to warm up the audience.

Paul Gilbert played first. Man, that boy needs to gain some weight. He played well though there were a couple issues with the sound, his guitar dropped out a couple times. It also seemed like he was a little off*. I was kind of suprised because he didn’t get all Racers X all over the place.

Next up was John Petrucci. That man is just amazing. Blindingly fast at times. He, per usual, didn’t miss anything. Or if he did he hid it so well that I didn’t notice. He was on. Interesting note, Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater played with John. It was kind of funny. I was talking to the woman I went with and mentioned that last time I saw DT play, Mike was losing drums sticks like mad. They were flying all over the place. Just as I said that another stick went flying across the stage. It must be dangerous to play with that guy.

Joe Satriani came up next. He played quite well. He isn’t my favorite guitarist. He is an amazing player but his style just isn’t my thing. He did put on a great show though.

The last part of the show was a jam with all three guitarist (plus a rhythm player) and that is where thing just got silly. They traded solos and just rocked. Paul seemed to be back on and played better than he did when opening. He also sang on a couple tunes, he is a passable singer but shouldn’t quit his day job. Joe and John were just smokin. John is freakishly fast. At one point he was playing and I was watching his pick hand and it seemed to disappear, it was just a blur. He is just mindblowing.

It was an awesome show. If you get a chance and like great guitar don’t miss this.

“I was talking to the woman I went with…” How did she like being the only one there?

How long was John Petrucci’s set? I really dig his solo album. Did he play mostly that? What else did he play?

I think they each played for 45-50 minutes. I suck at estimating time though…

I haven’t heard his solo album so I don’t know if they played anything from it. I assume that most of it was his solo stuff because I didn’t recognize most of the stuff, which is actually cool. They did a tune off of Change of Season but I can’t remember the title. I liked his set quite a bit, though I have to admit the sound could have been much better. I saw DT at the same venue and DT sounded much clearer. The sound was a bit muddy, at least where I was sitting. They didn’t do much speaking between songs so no song titles.

Good thing I am not a music critic, huh? The articles would be really boring and quite useless (‘The second song, the name of which I don’t remember…’).
