Gah! Mattress buying sucks.

I bought a Tempurpedic for my guest room three months ago. My mom loves it when she visits.

We got the basic model (queen size) that was a close out special. $1900 plus tax.

The high end ones are 3000 and up.

It’s not nearly as heavy as a traditional mattress. Makes it easier to move when needed.

One other option to look at is to buy one of the demo style mattresses that have firm on one side and plush on the other. It wouldn’t cost you any difference in price and if you’re willing to buy the one in the store they’ll often heavily discount it. SWMBO and I were going to do this through Sears after our mattress fell apart and we had to get a new one under warranty, which was painless I might add. We found a mattress we could both be comfortable on, a Sears o Pedic, so we opted not to. The only real problem I could see is that you couldn’t rotate the mattress, but depending on the model you may be able to flip it. My $.02.

I’m seeing a lot of dislike for sleep number beds, but it keeps me out of the hospital. I had back problems since high school. about twice a year, I’d wind up in an emergency room, have the doctor give me muscle relaxants to get me stoned for a couple of days , then back to work. Got a sleep number bed and haven’t had a serious problem since. The only problem is, over time, the edges sag. That takes away the support. I’m a woodworker, so when I made my bed, I made it in the style of a Captain’s bed. The sides have drawers, so they go half way up the side of the mattress, and have a cut-out where I usually sit on the edge of the bed to put my shoes on. This support from the bed makes the mattress feel like new. Now that its contained, I’m in love again.

Check out Serta iSeries. Amazing blend of comfort and support/firmness.

Most companies are spending all their R&D on the memory foam beds. If you want a high-quality, non-memory-foam bed, the Serta iSeries rocks. (not iComfort, that’s the memory foam)

Under $1800 for a king size.

I finally got around to calling Select Comfort today because of the broken-down-edge issue with our Sleep Number bed. Apparently it’s still under a prorated warranty, so we got some discount off the replacement foam edges; if those improve things my satisfaction level will go up a lot.

But while noodling around, I found this site:

which is VERY informative about the different aspects of various mattress types. Now, I don’t know where they get their survey information from, but what I read about the Sleep Number bed seemed pretty spot-on.

I have a firm mattress with a memory foam layer topped by a “plush” layer. It’s lovely. I’ve had it for five years, and so far no sagging (even though I"m not a small person).

And a shout-out to my heated mattress pad, which just gilds the lily on cold nights.

I’ve boosted latex layered mattresses with an adjustable Euro-slat foundation several times.

I’d just like to add that being able to tinker with the support by moving little lock-blocks around on the slats has allowed me to stay comfortable even as my body and sleeping habits change - something no simple air-adjustable mattress can do, not really.

I also tore apart the mattress assembly recently with the idea that I really should rotate the latex layers for maximum life. (The makers say not to bother, but you know them.)

After five full years of being slept on by two ahem bigger people, accompanied by at least one very large dog and often both of them… the mattress layers looked absolutely new. Not the slightest trace of sag or flattening or distortion. None. Zero. I went ahead and flipped all the sections, just cuz, and the only result for all my effort was that it squared up themattress nicely - the corners tend to slowly tuck in a bit within the shell, but I could have fixed that by unzipping the top flap, tugging and tidying a bit and then rezipping.

I reiterate my opinion that the only sensible option for a quality, long-lasting mattress that accommodates change over the 15-20 years you will own it and does NOT have the cost, quality and value issues nearly all commercial mattresses have these days is latex over euro-slat.

A few years ago, I replaced a sagging queen size with a memory foam mattress. Hardly had any back pain since but now my box spring sags!

I bought a mattress online (from Amazon) a year or so ago. It’s phenomenal. I found a brand touted on Mattress Underground, read reviews, and bought it. I love it.
