have my os (windows 2000) on a 10 gig partition on my hard drive. something on this hard drive is taking up 7 gigs of space. how do i track down whats taking up all the space? thwe winnt directory is 1.4 gigs… which sounds about right, program files dir claims up 1.3 gigs and my documents takes 900 megs. so how do i track down the large directories that i may not need? is there any way to arrange directories by size?
You’re “missing” about 3 GB, by my estimate. I’d guess most of that is just your swap file (where virtual memory pages are stored to disk). This doesn’t appear in any directory, normally, but it shows in the disk defragment program.
“TreeSize” (google for it) is a little utility that will show you a nice heirarchical breakdown of what size the visible files on the drive are.
