Galton-Henry fingerprint classification

I’ve repeatedly read about a method named after two scientists, one Mr Galton and one Mr Henry, that has to do about examining fingerprints. What I’ve understood about that, the Galton-Henry scheme is a formula that allows every fingerprint to be translated into a code containing a description of that print, enabling the police to archive individuals and search for a person whose fingerprint is identical to a given pattern. Searching for that keyword on Google yielded many websites where the two names are mentioned and some magnum opus essays about dactyloscopy and biometrics in general, but no compact description of how GH works.
Anyone has some details about the Straight Dope on this? Thanks.
