I think all the big releases have come out for the year. So what’s the game of the year?
I wanted it to be God of War 3 since that’s my favorite franchise but the very end was a disappointment so I cant vote for it so…
Red Dead Redemption takes the crown this year for me. Easily the best voice acting of any video game ive ever played by far. John Marston is easily one of my favorite video game characters of all time now too. Every character in that game wAs memorable from Seth to Mr. West Dickens. John was always polite but was a bad mofo. Dead eye was perfectly implemented. The Undead Nightmare DLC is like an entire game unto itself. About the only thing I would changes is that John is fairly wonky to control in close quarters and the ending would have turned out differently if the player had full control (don’t want to spoil it).
Otherwise best game of the year and the best franchise reboot ever.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is coming out 7th of December, if expansions count.
Most of the games I’ve been playing this year are older than 2010, so I don’t really have many candidates. Fallout: New Vegas would get my vote, I guess - played Civ V more, but Civ V has more obvious flaws to it. Hmm, just realized Mass Effect 2 came out this year too. It had a better, more streamlined story than Fallout: NV, but it was also far more linear and had less replayability value IMO.
So yeah, Fallout: New Vegas from the games that have launched so far. I will be resubbing to WoW to check out Cata, though.
Mass Effect 2 for me. Has been kind of a crappy year for the genres that I like. Especially the back to back disappointments of Elemental and Civ 5. Not that I really mind since I have so many older games to catch up on, anyways, but it makes the “game of the year” discussion a bit more sparse than I’d like.
SCII brought back that classic RTS formula in a great way. the single player was particularly good, and the multi-player as brutal and as interesting as ever.
But push come to shove, I guess I’ll have to go with ME2. An improvement in most places over the original, and one of the best, most epic RPG’s this year.
ME2 for me by a comfortable margin, on a side note Bayonetta seems to highly rated and in the running for GOTY awards but I didn’t ‘get it’ at all, just not cup of tea I guess.
I haven’t played some of the big games this year (notably ME2 and FO:NV) but man was 2010 a shitty year in gaming. Very few good titles released.
I’d have to actually say that the most fun I’m having with a game this year might be Just Cause 2. The controls are kinda bleh and consolized but technically it’s excellent. They designed it the pc version to be native DX10 from the ground up (unlike most games which have a dx9 renderer with a few 10/11 features tacked on) which allows it to run amazingly well. It’s very detailed with infinite draw distances and runs at a high frame rate with almost no drops. It’s probably the third most beautiful game I’ve ever seen behind Crysis and Dirt 2.
And it’s just pure fun. When I rode a motorcycle off a cliff to parachute onto a limo to hijack it, I was hooked.
Red Dead Redemption was easily the best game I played this year. The game play was solid and consistently fun. Hunting, dueling, horseback riding, shooting random stuff - those activities were all solid and fun to do. The missions ramped up reasonably well. They never got too difficult, but they weren’t super duper easy, either. I thought the story was great, and I was honestly surprised by something that happens at the end. People called it GTA with horses. That is fair, but even if it did borrow from GTA in some respects it added it’s own bits and pieces to be new and different in it’s own right. Great story, great idea great execution. My favorite this year. I haven’t tried out the Undead Nightmare download yet, but I might get that at some point.
Heavy Rain was good, but flawed. It can’t hold a candle to RDR.
I think those were the only two games in the GOTY conversation that I played all the way through.
