Game of Thrones 2.01 "The North Remembers" 4/1 - ZERO SPOILER Discussion Thread

It didn’t rebut it at all, not to mention directly.

The basic post was “knock-off genre shows will be awesome.”

The response is “no, they usually suck. Here are examples.”

Yeah, really hard to see what he was going for there.

And what if DigitalC’s point of view is that “more epic mediaeval fantasy shows” by itself is “awesome”?

It can be awesome that “Playboy Club” and “Pan Am” were made, even if those particular shows weren’t very good.

There are always trends in genres. In fact, nearly every show on television is some kind of genre. So, if you have one successful show in a genre, producers should quit producing that genre? Because “Seinfeld” was an excellent sitcom, “Arrested Development” should never have been made? Because “Star Trek: The Next Generation” was a successful sci-fi show, “Babylon 5” and “Firefly” should never have been made? Because “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was an excellent show about vampires “True Blood” should never have been made?

The more shows that are made in a genre, the more likely that there will be more good shows of that genre.

Our DVR was on the fritz and for awhile we couldn’t see recently-recorded stuff, so I didn’t get to see it until last night.

Wow. S2 is off to a GREAT start! Tyrion is awesome as always. Stannis isn’t quite as I envisioned him (I always thought Mark Strong would be good in the role: http://i2.listal.com/image/113836/600full-mark-strong.jpg), but he, Davos and Melisandre were all good. Joffrey is just as hateful and nasty as he ought to be. Heheheheheh.

I liked the Craster’s Keep scene, up north of the Wall, and Robb’s scenes with Theon and his other lords. Nice subtle power dynamics there.

Good CGI shot looking over King’s Landing on the balcony with Shae (who’s definitely still not how I envisioned her).

Couldn’t Hodor have said “Hodor” just once? Pleeeeease?

I agree that Littlefinger was uncharacterstically bold in implying that he knew of Cersei’s and Jaime’s incest. Her reaction was entirely in keeping with her character, though.

Best LOL bit: Varys’s apologetic expression when he reads Tyrion’s commission as acting Hand. The moment the words leave his mouth and the Queen erupts, he does a little seated half-bow before scooting out of the room. Love it!

Good stuff all around. Really can’t think of any particular criticism or nits to pick.

Thank you, yes that was exactly my point.

Medieval fantasy is way played out in our culture, I think - especially if it’s straight tolkien ripoff orcs and elves and swords and sorcery universe. The interesting thing about this show (and the books I suppose) are that it’s fairly realistic - it’s mostly about people and politics - and rather less about the typical medieval fantasy stuff like monsters and magic and heroes.

Basically, it’s designed to interest intelligent adults, and I can’t imagine if one of the regular networks tried their own version of it, it would have the same aim.

I don’t mind going through a hundred shitty pilots if we get one gem.

Unless it is promoted as, “A SyFy Channel Original”. Then it is hopeless.

Wow, didn’t intend to make so much of an argument. I have no problem with more fantasy show. The problem is whenever something new breaks out, the networks rush to churn out as many crappy knock-offs as possible. Think about all those crappy one season Lost knock-offs that came out after the show took off.

I really enjoyed some of them actually. I much rather have Lost, or even better GoT knock offs than yet another hospital drama, crime scene investigation drama, cop show, lawyer drama, or god forbid reality show. 90% of what’s on tv is going to be shit anyways, but there is always the chance that somethings turns out to be good and if it happens to be a medieval fantasy show then i’ll be quite happy.

Even if there’s a glut of bad sword-and-sorcery series coming soon to a TV screen near you (which I rather doubt), I’m confident my fellow Dopers will let me know when there’s one actually worth watching.

I believe what enalzi was saying was …

Brace yourselves - shitty knock-offs are coming.

  1. LOVED Little-bitch-king getting slapped again.

  2. Loved how the Stark-daughter is trying to play submissive, but her very nature keeps getting in the way. I think she’s going to learn how to be a great manipulator when the time comes.

  3. I’m wondering if they’re going to feed the dead horse to the dragons. She better be taking good care of them!

Some interesting details here: The North Remembers - Wikipedia

I got the impression dragons are particular about the meat they eat.

I was thinking the humans would eat the horse themselves.

I wonder if dragons only eat the “long pig.”

I don’t think they are any more particular than any other carnivore in that respect.

Also, according to that Wiki, it was Joffrey who ordered the executions of all the bastards. I still don’t remember them making that clear in the episode though.

They didn’t.

Well, the infanticide took place immediately after Cerscei smacked him for asking if King Robert fucked around on her when he got tired of her, and he gave her that warning, “That will be the LAST time you ever do that!”

Cut directly to Ros talking that whore talk and babies being knifed. It sure did look to me that Joffrey ordered it.

Joffrey asked about the bastards after reading the letter from Stannis, the one who would be wanting to get rid of them would be Cersei not him.
