Game of Thrones 2.01 "The North Remembers" 4/1 - ZERO SPOILER Discussion Thread

Um, why? He’s the one who will lose the throne if the letter is true. The way it played on TV made it look as if Joffrey ordered the killings. The last we see of Cerscei is her face as she realizes her son could very easily ordered her beheaded if he felt like it.

Joffrey wanted to see the bastards to check the veracity of Stannis’ claim, that was what got him slapped in the first place. Why would he order them all killed sight unseen? he was actually curious. Cersei is the one with something to hide.

They would not eat the meat Daenerys was trying feed them, and she was talking to her servant about it.

The thing she has to hide was standing right in front of her and had nothing to do with the bastard children, which she knew about all along. As was shown on the TV show, Joffrey asked about the bastards, threatened his mother and then all the bastards, save one, were dead.

Now, this series of events is a bit ambivalent but it leaves this viewer (and others) with the distinct impression that Joffrey ordered the killings.

Oh, I was absolutely certain that Joffrey ordered it. He saw a threat to his throne… plus he’d just been humiliated by his mother in front of peasants. He needed to flex his muscle, and show them ALL he really deserved the throne. Perfect childish revenge.

I hope that they will clear that up in the next episode.

So I was thinking - in this episode the rumor is that Renly has raised an army of 100,000 men. That’s an absolutely huge army. The strength of the Stark force was estimated to be at 20,000 men. When Tywin Lannister gives half his army to Jamie, I think he says it’s 30,000 men, meaning the Lannisters started with 60,000 but have since suffered defeats and the scattering of half that force. The Dothraki army they were afraid of invading was 40,000 men.

In comparison, 100,000 men seems to make Renly the dominant player in the world - which is a pretty remarkable thing for a guy who has no real legitimate claim on the throne.

Remember last season Renlys lover told him his house would support him, that’s the strength of two houses compared to a single house for the Lannisters and Starks.

Was it ever made clear which house does the flower knight belong to? As far as 2 houses - I wonder if house Baratheon would give Renly his full support when Stanis has the more legitimate claim. It’s also unclear how big Stannis’ army is at this point.

I think they said he belonged to house Tyrell.

Ah, yeah. And the father is rich - he mentioned that when he was making the case to Renly that he’d have support to be king.

I really hope the plot line with Daenerys is going somewhere interesting. Right now she’s a distraction from all the cool stuff happening on the main continent. The actress isn’t up to par either compared to the rest of the cast.

Not sure how long this pinned thread arrangement is planned, but I started the episode 2.02 non-spoiler thread.

Thread unstuck, see SenorBeef’s new thread for episode two of the second season.
