Game of Thrones 4.02 "The Lion and the Rose" 4/13/14 [NO SPOILERS]

I also don’t think that a line that references something out-of-universe cheapens or takes away from the show at all, so long as it also works in-universe and isn’t delivered with a wink to the camera.

Book of the New Sun is a lot more likely to be something Martin would reference. He has to have a ton of respect for Gene Wolfe.

I thought it was weird that one guy yelled “Light Saber.”

So, apparently this is going to be this week’s “Is Dany literally half-dragon, like way back when some Targaryen did the nasty with a dragon and she’s got dragon genes and everything?”

IMO, doing something that silly CANNOT be done without a wink to the camera. Doing it at all IS winking to the camera. Honestly, I wish we could relax the book policy just a tiny bit for this; if the names were straight from the book, this entire ridiculous tangent is settled.

Who were the people Stannis burned at the stake? Was one of them the sea captain whose son died at Blackwater?

Various heretics. One of them was his brother-in-law. The sea captain (Davos) is still alive. He was the guy at the end telling Stannis that he shouldn’t have done that.

I was a little nervous when the witch visited Stanis’s daughter. My guess is that she intends to sacrifice the daughter and Stannis is going to end his association with her over that.

High Valyrian sounds a lot like Latin.
The look on Tyrion’s face when Joffrey chopped the book apart was priceless.

Stannis is probably glad he is already married.

My guess is that she’s going to be trained to be a witch. She referenced there being only two gods, one of light and one of dark - and specifically touched the girl’s scaly side when doing so. I’d guess that someone who has clear “half good” and “half bad” physical characteristics would be very important to a religion focusing on such things.

You missed splayed vagina by one of the contortionists.

“Splayed Vagina” is a band name if ever I’ve heard one.

Before learning of his true fate, I had assumed Cersei was ultimately going to cling to power by seducing Joffrey ala Agrippina and Nero.

Do you think Joffrey honestly did not know who his real father was?

Oh, indeed.
And for my money, it was. Not only is the phrasing both modern and identical (when the Hound could have said “every man needs a code” or “we all draw the line somewhere” or something), but more specifically, like Omar he seemed to elude the initial “a”. “Man’s gotta have a code” is what I heard him saying.

Between this and the various “A Song of Ice and Wires” tumblrs out there, it was hard not to make the connection.

I like how Podrick was like “Hey I remember her can we go baAawwww” about her while Oberyn was like “I’d totally tap that. Oh hey, that’s ser Loras. I’d totally tap that.”

But yes, all weddings should have naked contortionist prostitutes. It’s the classy touch.

Man was that close to being a full on shot of ladyparts! Second biggest shocker of the episode, and much more pleasant to look at than poisoned Joffrey.

Really digging Oberyn and Ellaria. His exchange with the Lannisters about bastards and rape/murder was great since it’s from somebody with no reason to fear them and basically called them filth to their faces.

(Speaking of paramours and Tywin, some young lady let 67 year old Charles Dance knock her up last year; guess he won’t be retiring anytime soon.)

I don’t know honestly. He still seems to hero worship Robert when he talks about him. (My father was leading a rebellion while you were hiding at Casterly Rock!)
He could just have a blind spot on the subject.

No, it’s a shout out to Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series.

The look on his face during many parts of this episode was priceless. IMO, very few people had a stronger motive to kill that shit than did Tryion.

I just wish they would have shown him ripping that monster apart - slowly with maximum gruesomeness (or is it gruesomosity?). He could hack off one arm, then another, then one leg, then another leg. etc. etc. It would have been very enjoyable. What a terrible little shit that guy was!

My reaction to that was basically identical to Podrick’s. I often defend the show against claims that there is a large amount of gratuitous nudity and violence. In most cases, I think the nudity and violence serve a real purpose on the show. But that - that - was purely gratuitous.

Not that I’m complaining, exactly. The girl had a nice terminus.
