I haven’t seen the series but how does it compare to Rome or Spartacus? Those series were certainly free with nudity.
I’d say it’s comparable to the early episodes of Rome and the Tudors. I haven’t seen Spartacus. Prostitutes are featured heavily and the sex lives of many of the characters heavily influence their decisions, actions, fate. One of the main characters is a brothel-keeper and one of the recurring characters is a prostitute. Scenes featuring those characters are often crafted in the form of someone engaging in exposition verbally while visually what’s happening is nudity and sex.
I agree with this. Lord of the Rings had some fairly graphic violence, but the asexuality of it made it seem a bit childish. Do Aragorn and the elf chick seem like a real couple in the films or in the books? Their relationship was all clasping hands and declaring love under a tree beside a moonlit pool.
Even the non sexual intimate scenes of Game of Thrones help flesh out the characters and the world of the series well. There’s a scene where Sean Bean and his wife are lying in bed cuddling and discussing important stuff. It’s hard to imagine Boromir doing something like that in Lord of the Rings.
Game of Thrones contains about the same amount of nudity as Rome or Deadwood. The books are quite full of sex, so I do sometimes wonder why so many book fans are appalled that there would be nudity in the tv version. I will admit, there was one scene with Ros the exposition whore in season 2 that really served no purpose and could have been replaced with a better scene, but other than that the nudity and sex mostly serve the plot and is rather keeping with the tone and spirit of the books.
That’s because people actually watch Game of Thrones.
Oh, you don’t say?
I might need to start watching this show now.
Kidding, kidding. I thought the same thing about True Blood, though, at first. Actually, I still think that about True Blood, because I’m only on season one, episode four and there seems to have been gratuitous sex/nudity in every episode (so far).
About as much as Rome. Less than Spartacus.
Plus I don’t think that Renly Baratheon and the Knight of Flowers were openly gay in the book - as in, there were comments made about their sexuality (or at least Renly’s lack thereof, when it came to his wife), but there were no gay sex scenes between them.
The funny thing is, the actors themselves laugh and use the term “sexposition” on a couple of the commentaries. Oh Ros, we’ve seen so much of you… SO MUCH of you…
Well I know there is nothing I like talking about more during hot sex than political and military history. “Oh yea right there and tell me again about how the peoples national movement split into three parties twenty years ago mmmmm”
They weren’t “openly” gay in the show; their relationship was suspected but Westeros had no Gay Pride Parades. Behind closed doors, we did see some rolling about & *hear *some enthusiastic fellatio, but the show’s heterosex has been more graphic. However, this comment does bear out the “butt-hurt by gay sex” theory.
The show reflect the books–which have lots of sex & violence. There are also some fine performances & the visuals are pretty good–recent scenes shot in Iceland were definitely impressive. So far, the plot differences don’t bother me; the later, flabbier books might benefit even more from judicious editing on screen.
Interesting that somebody would raise this subject just after we saw an episode featuring no sex, nudity or really graphic violence. (And where’s the anger at all the blood, guts & horse beheading?) Outrage sells! I didn’t bother to give the linked article a hit–does it include pictures? Or salacious descriptions of all that nasty sex?
(Oh, and I love LOTR. The books are truly great & the films pretty damn good. Not every work of art has to deal with every aspect of life in equal measure; GRRM isn’t much of a philologist.)
I don’t mind the sex scenes and nudity when it’s part of the plot and by characters who already have a role in the show. I could do with a lot less scenes by whores just for it’s own sake.
Wait, what? In what way does my comment “bear out the “butt-hurt by gay sex” theory”? I could care less one way or the other. I was just making the point that the gay relationship wasn’t as open in the book (to the readers) as it is in the show (to the viewers).
It’s not surprising. The shows are amazingly true to the books, only with more obvious nudity (which hasn’t got the same thrill in a book). But Sex Sells, as we all know. Back in the early days of cable, they were even more outrageously trying to shoehorn nudity into the shows in order to lure an audience and to differentiate themselves from non-cable TV, which didn’t have such nudity. So we had imported Aussie soap operas with gratuitous nudity and specials with pointless toplessness. This is just the same trend, only now they work a little more at integrating the nudity and sex into the show so the seams don’t show.
I’m pretty sure the last episode (2x05) was the first one without any nudity. The HBO CEO of Tits must have been on vacation.
What… only 1,088 views!!!
Don’t worry, I’m HBO’s Executive Vice President of Tits, and I assure you the boss will be back next week. Everybody needs a break once in a while, even people with rockin awesome jobs.
Well, this board won’t let people post pictures.
Most of the violence is brief, and doesn’t slow the story down. They also don’t seem to feel the need to add any (probably because there’s a ton in the books already).
Again, I don’t have any problem with sex scenes. Maybe my problem is due to the fact that so many of them involve Littlefinger, and I don’t really like the actor.
Well, I’m tired of all this sex on the telly. I mean, I keep falling off! [/monty python]
there’s a lot of that too.
