The new season of Game of Thrones begins this Sunday, based on the second book of the series, A Clash of Kings.
While his thread will only cover things that have happened in the show up to this episode, information from the books is welcome, IF it’s something the series (this episode included) has already covered, or something likely now passed over by the TV show and not likely to be covered, or just general background things which do not affect plot.
Do not post events from further in the series (book or show) even with spoiler boxes, save events from the next week previews. Those should generally be spoiler boxed, but use your best judgment. NEVER give any other future plot points or twists away, even in spoiler boxes.
Basically, no complaints if someone dares to mention the slope of a floor, or contrast how something was covered in the book vs how the show dealt with it.
Determined to avenge his father’s death, the newly proclaimed “King in the North”, Robb Stark, continues his war against the Lannisters and the boy king Joffrey. But there are more claimants to the Iron Throne, including Stannis Baratheon, who is supported by a priestess of a strange god. Meanwhile, Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch continue their trek beyond the Wall, and Daenerys and the remains of her khalasar are forced to cross the Red Waste.
Okay, now that that’s settled, where do you think they will cut off the first episode? In Clash, Daenerys and Dory only have one chapter each for the first 200 pages, and Dory in particular may need to be developed more than that, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they jump ahead in time with their stories in ep 1.
Aside from creating discussion, i’m asking because I am re-reading Clash for the first time in a decade and am trying to stay ahead of the show since I wont have it finished by April 1 (30% in now)
Is the spoiler policy difference between this thread and this one by SenorBeef significant to keep both threads? I see they’re timestamped just a little more than an hour apart so I could easily merge them or close one, if so wanted. People will want to start a full-spoiler and half-spoiler thread eventually, like last year, so I’m not sure if this won’t fall between chairs.

In another thread I started about the series based on an article I read in Entertainment Weekly, it is obvious the HBO series will re-arrange scenes for TV storytelling reasons. Things happen in this season that do not happen until the next book.
I think it makes the most sense to have two threads for each episode - one with spoilers and one without spoilers. Or in other words, one for people who HAVE read the books, and one for people who HAVEN’T read them. There are going to be two very different types of discussions going on based on whether this material is brand new, or if you’ve already read Clash of Kings. And as you can tell from the other thread for S2E1, the non-readers are VERY defensive about seeing anything that could even remotely be considered a spoiler. Know that there’s a character named Davos (or even one named Dory!) would be enough to put some of them over the edge. So they have their thread where Davos won’t be mentioned until about 10 minutes after the first episode aired, and then there’s this thread where we can discuss who will be playing him (although I’m more curious who will be playing Brienne, as I just got up to her chapter in my re-read).
And to answer my previous question, I have a feeling that the end of that same chapter - the KING Stannis is at the door, King Renly! – might be how episode 1 ends
HOWEVER, I think the OP is really complicating things in the fine print of his rules. He’s saying some spoilers ARE ok, and some AREN’T. IMHO, all spoilers should be fair game here, and no spoilers fair game in the other thread. Cuz then otherwise we’re gonna need THREE threads, and that’s just silly.
Maybe. There’s no way to know if something has been “passed over” or “not likely to be covered”. This happened in the first season – an event from the second book was included in the final episode (Arya leaving King’s Landing).
So it won’t be “safe” in a non-spoiler thread to talk about something we think the writers didn’t include. They’re not sticking strictly with the books, so they could be including it later.
I don’t care how many threads there are, as long as there’s one thread for talk solely about the show – no book talk at all, not even in spoiler boxes. Especially not in spoiler boxes.
I thought that the plan was ONE thread for each episode that was 100% spoiler free (SenorBeef’s thread,) and then two more threads TOTAL, not for each episode. One was to be like this, open spoilers for the book up to what has aired, and the last one for open spoilers for all books.
But having three threads per episode is too much, and the two spoiler ones won’t get many replies. So might as well have both of them just be season-long threads.
The season hasn’t even started and I’m already confused on what’s safe to post and where. Okay not really, but it seems like it’s already starting to get out of hand.
I am very excited for Sunday though, and I’m interested to see the longer term results of some of the minor and not so minor plot changes they’ve made.
