Even people who disagree with you should acknowledge when you get in a zinger that good. It irks me when they don’t. “Well met, blindboyard…you win this round.” Is that so hard?
Yeah, it really was little more than a dodge & weave from blindy, who was trying to avoid the fact that his entire OP was slamming a woman with false accusations.
He doesn’t win rounds by staying off the playing field.
(The Sarkeesian Effect is a crowd-sourced video intended to rebut the contents of Sarkessian’s feminist tropes videos. Jack Thompson was an attorney who filed lawsuits against game publishers in the early 2000’s, claiming that they were liable for murders committed by people who played their games. He has since been disbarred.)
So now Gamergate (ostensibly a movement opposing censorship) is making common cause with the one man who worked the hardest to actually censor videogames.
So GamerGate is officially and truly done now, right? No group that includes Jack Thompson as a positive force for video games can ever have the upper hand.
This a little different than the fallacies you cite. This is like a vegetarian group releasing a video of an interview with Hitler promoting vegetarianism. And then a bunch of people chime in saying “Whoa! Hitler is a vegetarian? I guess he’s not such a bad guy.”
I suspect they were trying to do was send the message: “Even Jack Thompson thinks Anita Sarkeesian is crazy! So she must be!” But what they wound up doing was giving Thompson a sympathetic platform to argue for more censorship of games.
It’s like you interview Hitler about his vegetarian views and he uses the opportunity to explain why genocide is a good idea.
The associated “guilt” here isn’t being pro-censorship, the guilt here is being too crazy and stupid to recognize when you’ve lost an argument, a trait both GamerGate and Thompson himself share in spades. Thompson is the guy who’s literally too crazy for Florida. Including Thompson as part of any advocacy campaign is a colossal misstep, because you are effectively admitting, “The only people we can get to support our cause are about two steps of rationality above a homeless street preacher.”
Calling the logical fallacy “Hitler was a vegetarian” is deliberate hyperbole. I don’t know from this Thompson guy, but I seriously doubt he was actually as evil as Hitler or even in the same league.
More importantly, I’m not seeing a bunch of people chiming in any such thing, and the link I cited is evidence against that notion…
Wellllllll…if a journalist is in this case a culture critic, and if a culture critic is someone who explains, in great detail, their opinion about an artwork to a large audience, and if a videogame is an artwork, then yeah, PewDiePie is a journalist. I don’t think any of those jumps are unreasonable.
