Gamers: Need help with game chair.

I intend to get my son a gaming chair for Xmas.

Since I know absolutely NOTHING about gaming, I’d appreciate any thoughts or opinions.

I saw one at Walmart for $79. What wasn’t clear to me is how does the chair hook up to my son’s PS3? Is that an extra cable I have to buy?
I’d like to keep it under $200. (My son is 14, small build, if that matters)

Thanks

Uh… chair? I mean, am I getting whooshed or something? What does the chair do, exactly?

Here ya’ go.

I had one of the cheap floor rocker ones you find at Wal-Mart. I hated the thing, it was exceedingly uncomfortable. Very little padding, and if you weren’t sitting precisely in the middle you ended up sitting on the hard frame. Might not be a problem for your son, but at 14 he’s likely to be growing up and out a bit more.

The actual “game” part of the chair was useless. You had to run a cable across the floor to plug it in, and when you did the speakers sounded worse than the TV speakers, even on the old CRT TV I had at the time.

They’re the kinda thing I could see being cool, but only for the nicer ones with good surround sound speakers and the like.

I don’t know about others in that price range, but if you’re looking for seating for a small room you might want to consider picking up a large bean-bag chair or a decent sized moon chair instead.

My kid has one of those cheap rockers as well. I didn’t need any extra cords, I believe it came with a 6’ or 8’ cord that connected to the audio out port on the PS3. Nothing much more to it that that and plugging the chair itself in. It’s just a set of speakers on a chair.

I don’t know how comfortable his is but the seat itself is all torn to hell because you’re naturally slouching downward while you’re sitting on it (esp. if you’re a teenager) and the cheap leather and stitching gives way under the weight. My kid is 13 and of slight build as well and his seat looks like someone attacked it with a knife.

this:

  • a high end gaming PC Or don’t bother.

For most other game chairs, the “game” part is just a set of cheap speakers. Get a nice, comfy desk/living room chair instead. There’s should be plenty of options at $200, and that’s all he’ll need to be comfortable while gaming.

Or maybe one of those big bean bag chairs? Those are cool.

My favorite gaming chair was one of those round Papasan chairs from PierOne Imports. You could recline but still have your feet on the ground. Many, many hours spent in it.

Not quite in the price range, but this would be a cool chair to play games from…
