I never realized that cell phones were an inalienable human right that separates free societies from dictatorship. One wonders how democracy survived prior to the late '90s.
Is it the victims’ fault the police abused their power here? No.
Would they have been spared the embarrassment if they had practiced some discretion in what data they created and carried around with them? Yes.
Does the existence of a few bad eggs a ‘police state’ make? Seeing that the people who committed this abuse are being punished and the victims are suing and likely to win, no.
This is such a perfect reply. Thank you for this. Sadly, I don’t think you even realize why your response is so insanely stupid.
Honestly, the cops were out of line, that’s clear.
The other side of the coin is that having nude selfies on your phone is eventually going to bite you in the ass. What if you lost your phone? In which case you’d find your images on porn sites all over the internet.
Yeah, cause the person who finds it will force you to give them your password.
Smapti, the day you disappear from this board or get banned, this board will be a better place because of it.
It’s a shame people can’t start threads like these anymore, because if they do, it just gives you a hard on because you know you have an established platform to make yourself center of attention.
Seriously dude, you suck.
No he makes good points.
See? “The best way not to have your money seized is not carry money”, or “The best way to keep cops from busting down your door at 3 am and throwing flash bangs into your kids bedrooms (wrong house, sorry), is to not have a house”
It’s only logic.
“The best way to avoid having your rights violated, is to not have any rights”
I don’t recall saying people shouldn’t have any rights. Please try not to put words in my mouth.
“The best way not to have (insert anything here) stolen is not have (insert anything here) on your person.”
It’s only logical.
If you say so.
I’m betting you missed out on that Egypt uprising and all that.
The one that started with a one-party state run by the military and ended with a one-party state run by the military?
Meanwhile, back on planet earth
You don’t need a password to access photo’s on a phone.
(as the cops proved in this case)
Try ginkgo biloba. If that doesn’t work, start your search engine.
Correcting that problem is one of the reasons for the new default-encryption arrangement.
Even worse, years ago I was working as a janitor at the courthouse where the Sheriffs office was and the deputies would watch all the confiscated porn. Some of the stuff ended up in the trash even the child porn which I was told can only be viewed by certain officers and must be locked up and destroyed as soon as possible. But policy is often different from reality.
And where in that thread did I say people shouldn’t have rights?
Actually, the right to be secure in your person, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable search and seizure is exactly that. There is no way anyone can argue that your personal information on your cell phone is not part of this coverage.
When cops rob people, do you say “they shouldn’t have had cash on them”? When cops rape people do you say “they shouldn’t have had a rapable orifice on them”? None of this is blaming the victim, because, you know, doorlocks.
To save people the trouble, here’s the relevant statement:
I need not reply; I’ll just imagine how someone else might:
