Broken Steel is coming out for Fallout 3 in a few days, and I want it. Unfortunately it’s DLC - unless I want to wait an unknown length of time (probably months, a bundle disc with this latest DLC is likely to be bundled with as yet unknown DLC).
However, I have absolutely zero experience with GFWL beyond hearing nothing but bad things about it. I’ve downloaded the client, set up an ID and all that jazz and identified the marketplace where to download the DLC (currently only The Pitt and Operation Anchorage are there, .
Is it safe to put card details directly into it to the live.xbox.com site (which the client redirects me to when I click “add points”) buy points? I don’t like buying stuff online beyond amazon, but they only sell points in increments of 2100 and 4200; all the dlc will cost 2400 points, leaving me up slack alley there. There’s nowhere in my locality that sells the cards, so I’m limited to online options.
So, I looked into buying them directly. I understand ‘Xbox LIVE [number] Microsoft points’ are the same thing and I can use it to download stuff for the PC. If I buy some now I can ‘test the waters’ so to speak and download the existing DLC to see how long it takes, and whatnot.
It’s safe. I did when I purchased the Anchorage DLC as well. It’s at least as safe as Amazon. The transaction is carried out on a secure connection and I haven’t heard about Microsoft screwing up with the handling of that information on their end.
Personally I hate the concept of “points” The heck? Make believe money? Why can’t I just fill up an amount in DOLLARS and be able to purchase things in DOLLARS?
pisses me off.
The good thing is that you can use the points to buy stuff either on xbox, GFWL, and zune marketplace. I have a zune so what I didn’t spen on the previous fallout 3 DLC I spent on music.
Thanks for the quick reply, Kinthalis, I’ll buy points directly off Microsoft then. I was trying to put off using GFWL for as long as possible - I’ve heard all sorts of horror stories about it, but Broken Steel looks too good to miss. In the meantime I can download The Pitt and Operation Anchorage. Apparently it’s fairly simple to get rid of GFWL and play the DLC like a normal mod, though.
I agree the system is very annoying, another reason I was avoiding it. It’s fairly transparent; they are trying to rip you off by only offering points in increments not divisible by pricing structure; common UK cards are 2100 and 4200, increments directly from MS are in 500, 1000, 2000. So I’ll have 100 useless points left even if I go with the most economical option.
