Light sabers usually thur off when dropped, implying tha tthe default switch is a deadman switch, but there’s precedent for them to be able to be on when not held; throwing the lightsaber at someone is a pretty common thing in SW canon, and obviously that only works if it can be switched on when you’re not holding it.

Or if you’re using the Force to hold the button down.
