Yeah, that’s the one I’ve got. Oh well. I do wonder though – what is the key difference between 4G and 5G that precludes a software update to the 4G iPod that includes gapless playback?
Most likely the what the processing hardware supports (the power of the processing chip).
An answer of sorts regarding gapless playbacks and why this is a toggable feature and not a bug fix:
If you set an album to “gapless” in iTunes, you can’t play it back with crossfade. It’s one or the other. So it looks like they made gapless an option for those who would rather keep their crossfade playback.
Mind you, iPod has never supported crossfade, so you’re not losing anything there.
For the record, it’s not actually a click; when there is a pre-existing gap, as on most records–the silence between tracks–nothing happens at all. It plays just fine. But when there are track divisions within a larger piece, or when one song fades into the next, then there is, not quite a click, but a seam. You can hear, distinctly, where one ends and the next begins. Maybe there is a fraction of a fraction of overlap, or something; it’s too quick to tell. And I can’t hear it when the transition is at a particularly loud point.
For the record.
The new Shuffle is due in October. The new 80GB “regular” iPod is available now, as listed on Apple’s online store.
The local Mac store here (Corvallis, Oregon) got a few of the 80’s in today.
All it would require is a database of lyrics to be downloaded and searched. In fact, it could probably be done now as a plugin with not too much work (and a little bit of inaccuracy) using one of the various web-based lyrics databases.
Step 2: profit.
Well, I got my click to go away and now have totally gapless playback. When I hooked up my Ipod last night, I noticed Itunes was going through and analyzing every song on my Ipod for gapless playback. This was the first time it had done this. This morning, when I listened, everything was perfect.
It took the better part of two hours for it to analyze the whole Ipod. But well worth it!
Any idea how you can find out which generation Ipod you have?
I have one with a monochrome screen which I bought when they were just releasing the colour ones.
There are pictures and descriptions on the Wikipedia page, but the easy way to tell is where the buttons are placed
1-2G: Thin buttons around the edges of the wheel.
3G: Round buttons at the top
4G: Round buttons on the wheel
It looks like there’s already at least one plugin that claims to search for lyrics and work with iTunes. I don’t think it actually lets you search by lyrics in iTunes, but it’s really not that hard a thing.
Oooh… I broke down and bought an 80 GB iPod. It’s so sweet. It can now hold my entire computer plus another 20 gigs for songs (not that I’d put my computer on my iPod, but still). It really is a marvel of technology, and I fully expect it to become obsolete by Christmas.
These are some pretty big problems. I keep reading on message boards about people experiencing the same thing - lots of static and noise as if listening to an old vinyl record someone went at with a brillopad. Other than that it’s fine.
The vast majority of lyrics on the web are unauthorized, typo-filled fan jottings. Many albums are released without printed lyrics. Someone would have to launch a lyrics database on the model of CDDB, and it would still always be a mess.
I don’t see it.
I have the audio problem. Restarting Itunes always seems to fix it. It seems to be a memory allocation issue causing playbacks to hitch.
I have been holding off on downloading 7.0 because 2 of my coworkers say they did and it’s giving them major problems. Here’s an article about it. Hopefully they fix it soon b/c I would like the new features.
I’ve been using iTunes since last week (the MacOS X version, anyway), and it hasn’t given me any problems, other than a new urge to complete my collection of album art so CoverFlow looks kewl.
I haven’t yet encountered any playback problems with iTunes on WinXP, but as I said I just use the default settings when ripping my own CDs. Certain other MP3s I’ve acquired through, er, other means I’ve also converted to 128 kbps AAC, the better to fit them all on my iPod; no apparent problems with playback there, either.
Coverflow looks cool and all, but its functionality is very low to me. If there’s an album cover on screen and I press play, I would expect it to play only that album. iTunes does indeed start playing tracks from that album, but when the album is over proceeds to play tracks from whatever is the next album.
Am I crazy, or with the new software does the iPod nano not take quite as much music? I could be totally wrong.
Whatever megacorp that owns CDDB has been going around suing the fan sites with lyrics on them. No one’s certain as to what they’re planning, but the theory is that they’re going to have an official centralized database of song lyrics.
Is there any way in iTunes to sort your tracts by album and artist? I can’t seem to find a setting that allows it, it’s an either/or situation.
