Garbage Day / Holiday weeks

Of course, that was seventeen years ago…

In the UK, each council makes its own rules. Bearing in mind that we have seven ‘bank’ holidays, five of which are on Mondays.

When I first moved here, whenever there was a bank holiday, the collection day moved forward one day. This caused confusion, so now we get our bins emptied on holidays (except Christmas day) as well.

The employees affected have a contract which sets out the number of days they can have as annual holiday (usually 20) plus the bank holidays, so they get 27 days a year paid leave. This means that they do not get extra pay for working while most people are enjoying a day off.

The same contract is frequently used for other people who have to work, like medical staff, bus and train drivers etc etc. Many truck drivers, especially those associated with 24/7 operations like car plants or supermarkets, are also paid this way.

Interesting.

No, the shifting back one day of many areas doesn’t mean they shift friday to saturday. It is possible that they get the work done in four days, the shifting of the timetable for most areas is just so that the garbage doesn’t pile up to spill over and go putrid because of the delay.

Plus I would imagine it takes longer to do your job when you are constantly fending off zombie attacks.

(zombie) Garbage day!
