Garbage disposal...what part do I need to replace?

So, this part on my garbage disposal got messed up to the point that I decided I just needed to replace it. I toss it in the garbage, and then decide to pick up a replacement part a couple days later when I’m at Home Depot.

Oops.

I can’t find it. The piece I’m taking about is the rubber(ish?) downward-pointing cone that sets low in the drain. It’s got slices taken out of it so that you can fit stuff down past it.

I’m pretty sure its main purpose is to keep the disposal from launching mangled vegetable matter straight into the air.

While at Home Depot I picked up a rubber gasket that, upon closer inspection, is actually installed between the bottom of the drain and the top of the disposal. But the shape is right…however, if this were the exact same part as the original one I wouldn’t have been able to just reach in and pull it out because THIS piece has an extra ring around the outside that AFAICT is a seal between the drain and the disposal.

Anyone have any ideas for me? I’m sure it’s a $3 part, but I don’t know what it’s called.

I think the part you are looking for is the splash guard. Does it look like this?

From your description, it is the splash guard. I’ve not seen them sold on their own at HD, but they do sell complete sink mounts for folks that want one in a color other than stainless.

If you’ve got something other than an In-Sink-Erator, you might have trouble finding parts at HD.An actual plumbing supply shop will me more likely to have what you need. Before you go, find out as much info as you can on the thing - brand, model number, etc.
