I assume since this movie is three years old that there was a discussion about it when it came out. But, as usual, it took me longer than most to get around to seeing it.
Overall, I thought it was okay. I know it was critically acclaimed, though I don’t particularly remember hearing any of my friends talking about it. Anyway, I have a question. I’ll box it in case there’s anyone else who hasn’t seen it yet.
How did the guy that lived in the boat get the necklace? I mean, it seems clear that Peter Saarrrrrrrsgarrrrrrrd must have given it to him, but why? And then why get it back? And if Mr. Abyss was such a spiritual, upstanding guy, why would he accept stolen goods (that were procured from a corpse, no less)? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but the whole plot point just seemed kind of disjointed. .
Thanks in advance for enlightening me. I don’t usually feel this stoopid. Oh, and feel free to discuss any other aspects of the film. I just assumed it had been done a long time ago, but I’m always up for a good movie discussion.
It’s a cute movie. I barely remember it. I really don’t like romantic comedies but I thought the girl was cute. **Aesiron **loved it and nearly twisted my arm to make me see it (kidding - but he really does love it) so I did.
Based on Aesiron absolutely raving about it, I picked it up one day. I guess we’re just fundementally different, because I didn’t see the movie as anything to rave over. Pretty decent, but the characters never did grab me the way they did many reviewers here on the Dope. Might be an age thing, tho. I’m twice Aes’s age.
I enjoyed it. It probably speaks to you more if you see it in your mid 20s while going through your post-college quarter-life crisis. Kind of like Chasing Amy or Singles did for people my age 10 years ago.
The soundtrack is really good too.
Natalie Portman’s character was the thing I liked least about it, and I usually like her. I think it might also be the only thing besides Scrubs I’ve seen Zach Braff in (exclding The Ex, which I am choosing to expunge from my mind)and I thought he did a great job.
Peter Saarsgard’s character stole the jewelry from Braff’s mother’s casket. He then sold it to someone, who sold it to someone, who sold it to someone, etc. He realized later that it was a mistake, so he then had to track it down, which included bribing Method Man to tell him who had it. Saarsgard contacted the guy and they all went down to get it.
The guy who had the piece didn’t know it was stolen from a dead person, he’s just a rare jewelry merchant who bought it through one of his usual channels. It’s unlikely that he knows where they come from.
Thanks, ** interface2x **. I guess I got the basic gist of it, but it would seem to me that any allusion to all that was so subtle that it went right over my usually observant head. I’m not sure if it’s a lack on my part or poor storytelling, but the whole thing just felt like it didn’t connect. Did the boat guy say anything about collecting rare jewelry ( he may well have; I admit that scene was so odd and at the same time boring, I may not have absorbed it). What was the reason for Saarsgard’s change of heart (I mean in terms of what was actually shown)? I don’t usually need to be spoon fed, but I felt as though * everything * was left up to the viewer’s inference.
