Garden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I planted up daisies today and planted hollyhocks and rose moss and blue dainthus.

We finished the shelves so we should have enough room to starth the next dozen packs of seeds.

What are you dopers doing for your garden?

Oh, and the crocus bloomed this weekend!!!1

This was meant for MPSIMS. Sorry!

Isn’t gardening an art, though? What fun! What kind of blue dianthus do you have? I’ve only seen red and pink. I love blue flowers.

I have only a container garden. I’ve got violas, yellow and blue, some lavendar and rosemary, lantana starting to bloom again (a lavendar one and a yellow one), yellow mimulus, and a bunch of lobelia seedlings. Also geraniums, and barley grass for cats. I’m hoping to grow herbs this year. I have packets of basil, chives, and cilantro seeds to start.

They are from Park seed, called Siberian blues. I also found blue geraniums and blue impatiens.
I plan to dig up much of the rest of my back yard for flower beds and one vegetable bed this year.

Not a crocus to be seen in my garden, but my Star Magnolia Trees are in full bloom. A little early this year, but a pleasant sight none the less.

Speaking of crocus’ they seem to be the only bulbs that the squirrels don’t eat. Does anyone have any tips on keeping squirrels from digging up tulip bulbs?

All I’ve got is a balcony, but stuff is growing!

My tiger lilies have been up for a week or so, and the freezing weather hasn’t hurt them. (They are from Saskatchewan, so three or four degrees of frost in the spring is no big deal.) My roses are showing new growth, as are the rosemary and oregano, and best of all I noticed today that my crocosmia has pushed up a couple of sprouts.

I’ve still got some clutter to clean up, and have to plant some more. Sweet peas are nice, so maybe I’ll get some of those, and some more herbs. And I still have some caragana seeds in the freezer, so I’ll try them. (I’m sure hardly anybody knows caragana. Look it up and you’ll see why, but it has sentimental value.)

We’ll also probably buy alyssum and more pansies in the spring and any dahlias that i can’t pass by.

The squirrels left my daffodils and iris alone. I don’t care as much for tulips. Ever try planting the tulip bulbs in chicken wire cages?
I spend way too much on the garden, but I do get quite a bit of exercise out of it. Should get some peppers this year!

Spring is coming . But for now I am starting plants in the house

I always interplant allium along with my other bulbs. The squirrels don’t seem to like the scent, or perhaps it covers up the scent of the bulbs they do like. They come in all sizes and many colors, so you can probably find something you like. The other thing I do is sprinkle the ground with cayenne pepper sauce after I plant new bulbs. This works for me.

If you are really desperate, you could follow lee’s suggestion and use chicken wire. Dig out your entire bed, set a chicken wire cage into the hole and plant your bulbs in it. It’s a lot of work, but the squirrels won’t be able to get to them. Of course, you won’t be able to get to them either (for dividing) without digging up the whole thing again. It’s more work than I’m willing to put in for bulbs, but there are people who do it.

Damn! I missed this thread, and started another in MPSIMS.

Howzabout saying where you are at?

I’m west of Chi. My crocus got hammered by the snow last weekend. Snowdrops are looking nice and just noticed som buds among the daffodil foliage this a.m. Tulips leaves peeking, and daylilies and sedum swelling and greening, as well as buds everywhere.

Little else, but with the sun climbing every day and temps seemingly moderating, it won’t be long.

This is my favorite time of year. So exciting and full of promise. I think that my favorite color has to be one of the fresh greens of new foliage poking through the soil in early spring, moist with dew.

What th’ hell. If we welcome cooking threads here in the Cafe, gardening should be okay, too. Let’s keep this one, and leave the Dinsdale thread in MPSIMS open as well.

We bought our seeds yesterday. We will plant in another three weeks probably. Mostly wild flowers. But we are growing moonflowers this year and I’m pretty excited about them. We found the white ones but have not found the purple ones. I may try out online today and see about ordering some.

Also, some California poppies, nasturtium and herbs.

Oh, and lupines, just cuz, ya know

We just got through dumping 16 dumptruck loads of dirt in our backyard and took down a lot of scrub and pine trees. (And I got to drive the Bobcat!) We actually have a back yard now, as opposed to the swamp that was there. We are planning to put a pond in, anyone know about these things?

Let me know how they work for you. I soaked them and nicked them and all that, and they sprouted, but once I transplanted them they did NOTHING! I was so disappointed.

Here in MI it will be some before I can safely plant anything outdoors. However, I note that my hyacinths are making their way up, as are various other bulbs.

Last fall bunnygirl brought me a bunch of daylillies to fill in a bed that my mom and I had started. I’m eager to see how they’ll do this summer!

Oh how I love the garden. It’s some kinda therapy. I wish I could say it was cheap therapy, but I can’t seem to stop buying stuff.
