gardening in hanging baskets?

I want to start planning on doing a little gardening this spring. I have six hanging baskets on my front porch with an irrigation system installed to water whatever is in the baskets. There is a lot of sun here well into the morning.

What edibles can be grown in a hanging basket? Tomatoes would be sooooo good! Anything else?

Thanks!

Growing tomatoes hanging from a basket isn’t all that uncommon. Herbs are easy too.

Strawberries work well in hanging baskets. There may be specific varieties just for this purpose.

I did green peppers in a medium pot on my deck. I suppose if your hanging basket is big enough, you could do it there.

What volume are the baskets? Some crops (such as cucumbers, melons, and tomatoes) do well hanging, but need quite a lot of soil space. Mint (like most of the mint family) doesn’t need much space, however, and will grow like a beast in any basket.

These baskets are about 18" in diameter and maybe 8" deep. The bottom is curved so it probably has less volume than those dimensions would suggest.

Nasturtiums have a black pepper like taste. You can eat the leaves and flowers.

Some thyme would be good. Common and or Lemon thyme.

You can grow bush cucumber plants.

I recommend the tomato variety Balcony from Burpee the seed of which is only sold at retail stores. Walmart

You can grow basil.

You could grow some small varieties of peppers.
