Gas Stations: 3 types of gas, one truck?

How come just about every gas station seems to sell at least three different flavours of gasoline (“OK”, “Good”, “Super”) yet when the tanker truck comes to refill the pumps, there’s only one tanker, not three?

The tanker truck has multiple compartments with different grades of fuel.

Three grades at the pump, two tanks in the ground. The pumps make mid-grade by mixing the low octane from one tank with the high octane from the other.

The tanker truck may have two separate compartments, or it could only be filling one of the underground tanks.

I wasn’t going to say anything since this is a bit of a hijack, but the way the gas stations label this just irritates the heck out of me.

Octane rating has absolutely nothing at all to do with the quality of the gas or its energy content. If you want to make “super” gas, take the cheap stuff and throw a bunch of alcohol into it. It will have less energy, your car’s mileage will go down, but it will be a higher octane.

Ok, rant done. Sorry for the hijack.

I never knew this! It’s like the middle handle on the fro-yo machine.

EDIT: sorry tried to post a relevant humorous picture. Wouldn’t have bothered if I knew I wouldn’t be able to work out how to do it…

Bah.

In at least one station here they get deliveries of different fuels on different days. Diesel comes in on Monday, regular on Wednesday…
