http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/South/03/27/gas.thefts.ap/index.html I thought this was pretty funny at first, but after thinking about it for a while, I guess that Law Enforcement can expect these things to happen a lot this summer, especially with Gas prices rising and jobs disappearing…Man, I wonder how many of these people own SUV’s
So, to clarify: your General Question is, “Has anyone ever witnessed a drive-off at a gas station?”
Me? No.
Or is your General Question, “How many drive-off perps own SUVs?”
I’ve never seen a statistic for “what kind of car drive-offs own”, myself, although it’s not impossible there are numbers out there for that.
In another lifetime when I operated a service station, among other things, there was the occasional drive-off. Since we were in a fairly rural area, a phone call to the sheriff’s office was usually sufficient. Local judges took a dim view of thieves of all ilk. So, I’d say yes, it was done now and then. But it was seldom done successfully.
I can’t help but wonder why anyone would witness theft and think it was funny, though.
I know in Kansas if you’re caught driving off, you lose your license.
You also have to have a driver’s license to pump gas. I wish they’d had that rule when I was a kid. 
I have a friend who worked at a gas station and her boss would dock her pay if she had too many drive-offs.
Your’re right. I apologise to all that were offended, I just find it somewhat bizzarre that people would start doing things like this. An old timer I know says that this was also a big problem back in the 70’s. I think the Gov’t had better step in and start doing something about these soaring gas prices NOW before it gets cmpletely out of hand. Next thing you know, people will start hi-jacking gas trucks just like they were in the old Mad Max movies :eek:
