Gather 'round the fire in the MMP

We’ve had a fireplace in most of our houses, but I don’t recall ever sitting in front of one just watching the flames and relaxing. Do people do that?

For us, it’s been a source of heat - well, mostly since we’ve had inserts that blow the hot air into the room. But I suppose it’s a source of romance or atmosphere for some. Or marshmallows. Or (reverting to last week’s MMP) chestnuts.)

Happy Moanday!

Morning. I have once sat by a friends fireplace.
I like Mondays.

Mornin’ y’all. Tis a rousing 28 centipedes outside. Up and sheveled, soon off to the museum. My glasses don’t like the cold…fogging up when I come inside. The dog is not a fan of the cold either. Her own damn fault since she munched her purple sweater.

The back is grumpy today. In a different way. Feels like I bruised my tailbone.

Have a good week, all.

Our house here in Elkhart has a “gas log” fireplace, which we have never used. It has a fan to circulate the heat, but it’s not as efficient as the actual furnace. In the previous place, we had an actual fireplace. It was enjoyable to watch and tend the fire, but energy-wise it was wasteful. It radiated heat into the living room, but it also sucked a lot of furnace-warmed air right up the chimney. It also gave us a way to use up the wood from the Bradford Pear tree and the tree that the Emerald beetles had killed.

We had a fireplace in Anchorage, but the problem with them is that you take a chance going to bed before it’s completely out. So we had a gas insert put in, which was better, but we rarely used it.

Tonight is the meeting of the pet cabal. I plan to wear all-black.

Fell asleep watching the latest Ken Burns epic (the American Revolution), so didn’t finish the episode. I assume it will appear on a streaming service at some point.

Sadie is staring at me from across the room, so I guess she wants to be fed. The wife is stirring, so I’ll get breakfast on the way.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinated, so no YAWN. ‘Tis 51 Amurrkin out and sunny with a predicted high of 73 and sunny. ATT will be here shortly, just got a text to say the guy is on the way, to install the new fancy pants high speed intartoobz. Guess we should start lookin’ for that villa on the French Riviera since we will soon be rollin’ in money. Tonight is men’s night over to the church house. It’s a wild Moanday here in da cave!

I have never lived in a house with a fireplace. I specifically said no to one when da cave got built. Never appealed to me.

OK, Darnell will be here soon. The anticipation is almost more than I can handle.

Happy Moanday Y’all!

The super-green passive house we bought seven years ago doesn’t have a fireplace at all. A chimney would be a big breach in the airtight architecture that allows the house to “breathe” in a controlled way.

We do, however, occasionally launch the Fireplace View on our big-screen TV.

My brother does that every Christmas when we gather there. The TV is over the fireplace, which is worth a giggle or two.

Showered, dressed, and about to descend to the basement. I’m going to sew up big “pillowcases” for the dog’s bed and mat. So I have that to look forward to.

FCD just left for the marina and for Lowes. My afternoon chore will be sanding the two aft doors that he’ll be bringing home. The finish is all peeled and nasty and it’ll be way cheaper for me to refinish them than to pay the marina whatever their hourly rate is.

The only other thing on my agenda is my derm appointment at 3:45. And whatever else pops up…

We use our fireplace occasionally. More for atmosphere than heat. We will have to watch the kittens closely this winter, however.

Growing up, we heated our house with wood, but that was a big cast iron stove, not a fireplace. Fireplaces are really not very good for heat.

Speaking of which, it’s 36 right now after being near 80 this weekend. I’d say fall is finally here, but I’ve said that like 4 times this fall.

This week is a bit of a respite from the busyness. No concerts this week. I’m skipping the next Chamber Chorus concert (because December will be insane) so no rehearsal tonight.

Fireplaces were rare-ish in southern California, where I grew up. We didn’t have one, and I don’t know that anyone in our post-war suburban neighborhood had one, either.

We’ve been having a lovely storm overnight and it’s still dripping. So far it has been a very wet November, and I plan on getting out today to see if our local creekbeds are starting to run. But for now, I have to close the damned laptop, get off my butt, and mop the kitchen floor.

Good morning.

It’s 47°F and raining. The morning will consist of rain, transitioning to cloudy skies with occasional rain showers in the afternoon, and a daytime high of 49°F.

We had a fireplace in the house I grew up in from third grade until I moved out. (I moved into that house in December 1972 and moved out in 1983). I remember lighting the fire as a kid, but my mom stopped using it sometime in the 90s. I know her chimney needed repair, and I’m unsure if it was ever completed. It was going to be very expensive. She still lives in the house.

The first home I purchased had a wood stove, which we used frequently to heat the house. I actually cooked on it when we had a massive power outage that lasted for over a week. My current home has a gas fireplace. It does put out heat, and that’s really the only reason I turn it on. When Brandi was still alive, I’d turn it on for her, because she just loved to lay in front of the fire. I guess I’m not all romantical, lol.

My husband has been jonesing to go for a bike ride, but with my crud and the weather, we haven’t been able to do so since the inaugural ride. He wants to try again this afternoon, but he’s definitely caught whatever crud I had, and I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.

Tomorrow or Wednesday look like better days to ride, anyway.

The pups finally have their vet appointment this week. Poor Maisie; her ear is really bothering her. I clean the ears every day for both of the pups.

I had strange dreams in the wee hours; the last one trying to obtain a turkey at a grocery store that I only go to in my dreams, in a place that’s only appeared in my dreams. I found the turkey, and for some reason, the kindly butcher took it to the back and trimmed all the fat because it was a mix of goose and turkey. I drove back home, only to find an unwelcome guest at the house, and I was disappointed that my son wasn’t there yet. I used the mountains as my guide to get back home, keeping Mount Rainier (except it wasn’t really Mount Rainier) as my guiding point, and another peak right next to it as a secondary point. There was more, but that’s all I remember.

Swampy, yay for cheaper internet. You’ll have to remember to invite us to your fancy villa.

Cervaise, does the passive house include AC, or does it remain comfortable due to how it’s built?

I suppose I should get on with the internettin’. Take care of yourselves, and Red, I really hope to see you post today. Still worried.

The latter. By definition, a fully compliant energy efficient passive house can’t have AC.

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 5c/41f with no predicted change, and mostly sunny. Weather app says “Taint that fucking good, taint that bad. See what I fucking did there?” Well, it’s definitely sunny and cold outside, but it did reach the heights of 6c when I was out earlier.

We’ve had fireplaces in all our houses although it’s very rare that I’d just sit and watch the flames. Sometimes we’d sit there and talk instead of watching films or something, but those are rare occasions. Fireplaces were more for decoration than for heat once we had central heating installed.

That sounds like far too exciting a Monday for most of us!

I’ve had a busy day doing lots of non-irk things today. Took ‘im indoors to the station, did the grocery shopping at lunchtime and have caught up on a couple of podcast things. I’ve been doing some irk stuff but I’m waiting for people to provide information so I can get on with other things, so I’m stuck until someone responds with the stuff I need.

I’ll be logging off at 4pm and heading to the gym to work off some of the weekend’s calories. Then I am making spagbol for dinner, so that should give me three decent portions. I have an awkward week as I’ve got to be on campus tomorrow (I’m taking Wednesday as a home day to make up for it), then I also have to be there Thursday and Friday. Messes up my batch-cooking plans a bit, so I am rethinking those a bit. I’ll work something out, I just had to make sure I’d got adequate sandwich makings from the supermarket as I may be going that route for the campus days.

Morning all. Must be prime sleeping weather, stayed in until after 8am again with only one bladder alert, so should be rested for whatever the day brings. Right now it is bringing 55F weather going up to 68F and exactly 0% chance of precipitation, per the Weather Wizards. I know winter is coming, but I can handle Novembers like this.

I have a fireplace, but not having one in the house through my growing-up years or in the apartments I lived in the first half of my adult life, I never learned (or taught myself) how to start and maintain it so have passed on whatever joys comes from it.

Cookie, happy secret plotting!!

FCM, so, let me get this straight; you’ll be sanding wood for some time and then go to see a skin care professional…that could possibly be interesting…

Pavo, have a good week of 'Do-Less".

Taters, well, at least your backlog of dream memories has been cleared out for awhile…

And in about an hour I’ll depart for the usual Moanday Shop-n-Sammich run and I have some internettin’ to do first, so take care and I’ll catch up with y’all in a bit.

no fireplaces. i think my mum would have wanted a franklin stove over a fire place, should that be an option.

we did have “faux fireplaces”. the areas that were originally fire places were bricked in when radiators and other heating options occured. sometimes the mantles were still there, so fake logs or arrangements would happen.

not many full work weeks left in the year, this one and then maybe one in december.

i’ve gotten into the advent calendar thing, i do have to put a few together to get the full 40 day advent. i’ve got a 24 day coming from a knitting/crochet website, then 12 day from birdmoss, and 12 day from amazon. that will give me some extra days. i will share some of the items so i don’t end up with more clutter.

do any of y’all do these calendar things?

Had a fireplace in the house I grew up in but it was never used. Even Santa didn’t come down it. My first married house had a fireplace. I think we used it once or twice. I have no interest in a fireplace.

First I’ll be scraping the old Cetol off, so sanding will likely wait till tomorrow. And I’ll be wearing gloves - duh! And washing up after. I figure the only aberration of my visit will be the many and varied Otis-induced scrapes and bruises. It will be an interesting appointment.

The first house I bought, before I knew FCD, had an ugly, homemade wood stove in the basement. Like a dummy, I replaced it with a Franklin-style wood stove. The old one could heat much of the house when it was fired up, but the replacement, not so much. Our current house has two fireplace inserts - pellet upstairs and wood-burning downstairs. They’re great for heating, tho the insert downstairs has a relatively small firebox, so the logs need to be shorter than one usually finds. Still, it can make the basement unbearably warm if we keep it fired up all day.

I’ve finished most of the sewing - there’s a giant cover on the mattress in the crate and a comfy mat in the living room for Otis - the mat being part of his training. We’ll see how that goes. It’s closing in on my lunch time, and afterwards, I’ll mosey out to the shop. For now, tho, I need a break.

I got to work at 034, and was immediately sent to Blue to split sort for the 2 bulk loads and the DELV. But since it was 90% bulk load, I was also loading the Pigs to make room on the chutes. I must have done at least 40% of the loads by the time I was relieved an hour later. Then I got sent to the 300 Slide, which was jammed. Plus I had to do all the set up, which took 10-5 minutes. Plus they shut off the belts at 0530, so there was a huge pike of stuff for the Irreg guys to drive around. And of course no Monday is complete without the Supreme Shouting Officer doing her thing. Anyways, I got gas and hit Aldi(figuratively, although someone literally did hit the building a month ago). The had Stilton, which I haven’t been able to find in Raleigh in months, so I bought 2 hunks. I made some oatmeal for breakfast, and a bagel with a schmear. Now it’s naptime till hockey.

I enjoy a good fire in a Beavis And Butthead sort of way.
I haven’t used the apartment fireplace in 10 years, not since the last ice storm power outage.

If you added an evil AI to that, it would be a Passive-aggressive house.

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Planning and foresight are not canine strengths.

I don’t. What did it do there ?

My brother had a big Blaze King at his cabin. It would run you out of the house with the heat it generated, but it was really needed when he went there in the winter.

I just remembered: we had a Franklin stove when I was a kid in Anchorage. Came in handy during the big earthquake. They also had one after they moved back to Alaska.
