Up from naptime. Canes beat the Bruins in hockey. Dinner tonight was cheeseburger with chilies, onions, and tomatoes and lime cilantro corn. And an Old Fashioned.
Not yet. But will be the cheese on next week’s cheeseburger for sure.

Good evening and want to get a late-night final in before bedtime. Almost kept my gym promise, only did 1,100 calories of treading and biking and resisted temptation to push beyond that. Put the calories back on with a trip to the WhataBurger and have spent the balance of the evening watching You Tube videos (don’t know if anyone else watches them but I am a big fan of ‘Kara and Nate’ and their newest one was over 90 minutes). Down to 47F outside but still nice and dry.
swampy, nice of the company to send someone to show you all the bells and whistles. Sounds like they did a competent job.
Hippie, and I thought teepeeing a house was the highlight of youthful hijinks…
Bright Tree, I’m not into fire as you are, but your descriptions are worthy of comment. Much thanks.
nellie, hope you keep at it on the Medicare stuff, and enjoy the puppehs. I have never been summoned to jury duty in all my 72 & 7/12 years on this planet, but who knows what will be in the mail tomorrow…
Yep, did find a source a little closer to my home and will take a cooler with me when I go see my brother over Thanksgiving since the stores up there stock it. Never developed a taste for the sandwich spread, however.
JtC, it is a pain, but good on ya for helping folks who need it. And the Lodge sounds like quite a nice place to go.
{{{Nettie}}}. sorry to hear about Allie and your other woes, but we abide and are hear for you. And cats must have a special ESP that lets them know yours is a loving abode.
And it’s 10pm so time for the pre-Slumberland activities and then retire to my bed. Catch y’all tomorrow.
{{{Nettie}}} So sorry to hear about Allie. My friend and co-worker is going through the same stuff right now. It royally sucketh.
I have a dog who has decided there is someone lurking in the crawlspace under the house and must be barked out. Or maybe she just wants the treats on my belt. Who can say…
We had a wood stove when I was really young, fireplaces later on. The stove warmed the house much better than the fire. I do remember one day when my parents were out and I was home alone and stoked the fire in the stove. I was maybe 8. At one house we had an insert thingy. Build a fire in the box and the blower sent hot air out into the room.
'scuse me, said dog just tossed the current favorite ball under the couch…
I rented a house here in upstate NY that primarily heated with a wood stove. That was fine until I tore an achilles tendon and really couldn’t walk much. It’s tough to split kindling on crutches.
I’m back. Son has collected the canines and is now home. Dogs crack me up. One of theirs, the shiny one, is medium sized (about 45-50 pounds). She streeettttccchhhed out on my bed to over 5 feet long. They shoulda named her Pokey.
I made honey whiskey apple cakes yesterday and sent some home with my son. I make one batch every fall. It started as a slightly bland cake a neighbor lady made us years and years ago, but over the years I’ve changed almost everything about it, so it’s really not the same recipe any more. I changed the glaze, too. I guess most of us have recipes like that. I bake it in mini bundt pans instead of as a sheet cake, which makes it easier to give away. I used to bring them in for select teachers when I was working–not for kids because of the hooch. It’s not enough to get Jiminy Cricket drunk, but there were too many LDS afoot to take a chance.
Swampy, thanks for filling me in. I hope it wasn’t difficult to talk about. The expression I like to use for people like the gold digger is an old-fashioned one: He proved to be unworthy. You definitely traded up.
So grateful for people like you and your dad! I wish everyone understood and appreciated the importance of serving on juries. And I relate to how your dad felt about wanting to serve. I was once picked despite my employment with the court. But the case settled after just one day of testimony, so we never made it to deliberations. I hope you get picked for a fascinating case that won’t traumatize you! You’d be an asset to any jury.
Also, don’t be shy to call SHIBA and ask more questions. I’ve done that, and gotten vastly different levels of experience.
It sounds like a very pleasant place, and even the plastic tub condiments are charming in their way. At least you don’t have to wonder if some kid stuck the nozzle of a ketchup container up their nose before you used it! And good drinks are like mowing a crappy lawn: They smooth over all manner of irregularities. ![]()
Scootch over, shoe. I’m right there with yas!
swampy, I like your tale with OYKW. Thank you for sharing it. May you share many more blissful years in da cave together.
nettie, it’s awful when our beloved pets begin to flag. She’s giving you a heads-up, and hopefully you’ll have some time to spoil her as much as you can before the day comes. I’m so sorry. Gentle hugs to you.
metal mouse, you always make me feel welcome here.
Thank you for that. And yeah, I can wax rather lyrical about fires. In my climate, they are wonderful. In yours…? Maybe not so much!
Yesterday was corned beef and cabbage with my friends. My contributions were homemade bread, beer and chocolate eclairs. First fire in the wood burner last night, as previously mentioned.
Ollie got a bath today and we had a pleasant little ramble around the place. Then I cleaned floors, changed bedding and did other laundry.
I just launched a sizeable spider off my lap and to… somewhere. It was crawling up my lap throw toward my shoulder. Best I can ascertain, it’s no longer in close proximity. Good enough. I don’t fancy its chances if it climbs back up on the sofa, but if it keeps to the floor or some other area where I can spot it, I’ll move it back outdoors.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It’s currently 36 degrees Ferret Height(2.22 Centipdes).
The Invisible Mole People.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 1c/34f with a predicted high of 5c/42f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “Clouds are fucking shady, man.” I wouldn’t know, there aren’t any out there, it’s all blue sky and sun for us.
Taint, instead of t’ain’t, one word is much more naughty than the other ![]()
It’s exhausting watching other people work, isn’t it?
It’s a very nice tale too, especially since you and OYKW get on so well together.
{{{{{Seanette and Princess Allie}}}}} I’m so sorry to hear that, those Small Egyptian Deities take up a lot of heart space.
I haven’t even started to think about hexmas yet. I did pick up a couple of CDs for ‘im indoors a while ago that I know he hasn’t got, so that will become a gift for him. I have a week of birthdays at the end of November, always said I couldn’t get my head into hexmas stuff until after all the birthdays were done.
They sound lovely, I hope he enjoys them.
My mum did jury service a couple of times, I’ve never been asked. One of my colleagues was picked for a jury, he was expecting it to be a week-long case at the most, it turned out to be over six months. Of course, that threw work into a nosedive because they also hadn’t expected him to be away for that long and hadn’t been able to plan for his absence. Fun times!
Not much excitement in my day yesterday. I logged out half an hour later than intended which put me behind schedule on everything else I needed to do. I went to the gym but had to cut my planned work out short, stopped off on the way home to get petrol as I was down to 45 miles left in the tank. Went home and fed the cats, changed litter trays, made campus food, collected up all the rubbish and hauled the biiiiiig bin out to the kerb for today’s collection, then made dinner for me (with enough leftovers for a couple more days).
Today I am on campus because there’s a meeting I have to be at. It’s not my usual campus day so that’s going to confuse me for the rest of the week. Hopefully the meeting finishes on time because as soon as it’s done, I plan to be out of here!
Good morning. We had a fireplace in the house I grew up in that we used very occasionally. Our house now has two of them, but we’ve never even tried.
It’s just all kinds of blah round here right now. I have an appointment with my therapist this afternoon. Maybe that will help. My brain is already fuzzy today. Like I said, blah.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 41 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 77 and sunny. Today is laundry day. The thrill of it all is almost too much. There will also be the usual RDOS inactivities. Sup will be the frozen turkey dinners we bought Sunday. I feel so slovenly, like I should spend the afternoon sittin’ on the sofa eatin’ bonbons and watchin’ soap operas before I put ‘em in the oven. The shiny new intartoobz do seem a lot faster. Stuff pops up faster at any rate.
*{{{Nettie}}} so sorry for all your woes, especially about Allie. You know you can always count on the MMP for support.
JtC burnt food onna stick is some good eatin’. Makes me think of hot dawgs on the grill. They must have a good char.
Bright Tree you would be the star of the potluck with goodies like that! Hope the big spider is not plottin’ it’s revenge for bein’ unceremoniously flung.
Nellie those cakes sound nummy. I might need to dig out a recipe I have pound cake with rum/pee-kahn glaze. So good when it sets for a day to let the glaze soak in. I bet the apple whiskey cakes are the same way.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Tuesday Y’all!
I ordered a couple of books for the grands. That’s as far as I’ve gotten. And in my best Grinch mode, I’m not at all looking forward to spending the day with my family at my brother’s. I have nothing against them, but 2+ hour drive there and the same back - UGH! I invite them here and they whine about the drive. Gee, whiz, I’ve been doing it for 21 years… Bah, humbug!
It’s TWENTY-EIGHT FERRETS here this morning!! Not impressed at all! And much rain expected tonight - that, at least, is good. The pellet stove was down to its last handful of pellets when I checked this morning, so it’s been reloaded. Hence the house is warm, despite the sub-freezing temp outside.
Weird occurrence yesterday evening.- Ziva was out and about before Otis was crated! I know they saw each other a couple of times and, thankfully, Otis didn’t bolt after her. I don’t know if they reached a detente or if it was the phase of the moon. Future developments will be interesting.
Also yesterday, Roxy finally got to ride her big bike. If you recall, she broke her collarbone a couple of months back, and just recently the doc cleared her for normal 7-y/o activities. Daughter sent me a video - she’s a tad shaky - it’s the first time without training wheels - but it shouldn’t take long.
I’ll have some shop time today after FCD finishes his sanding. He’s got a stand-alone pellet stove out there and it can heat the shop to almost unbearably hot. Saves us a small fortune in electricity by not using the mini-split. Plus it’s a good warm. I need to take another load of pellets out to him - my garden cart can hold 3 - that’s 120#. Anyway, I’ll try to get the doors all prepped for Cetol application.
No real plans beyond that. So far, anyway.
Happy Tuesday!!
Sunflower has a pre-surgical physical with our PCP today. She has arthritis that has resulted in the joint between the top of her right thumb and her wrist is bone on bone. Next Wednesday she will have the corrective surgery.
Also, on a good note: the final payment on her sewing machine cleared this morning. She has a Bernina 790 Pro model which was the top of the line two years ago. Naturally there is a new top of the line but the improvements are minor.
Stressed as usual. Did I ever tell you I hate PTSD?
It snowed overnight last night and we had several inches of snow. Thankfully I had changed the tires on Sunday.
Damn computer is acting up. I haven’t changed to Windows 11 and it’s probably doing this intentionally.
Not feeling well enough to say anymore.
Grrrr
Mine is too old/underpowered/something to use Win11, but the mysterious Microsoft pixies keep trying, then I get bluescreened and have to restart. Pain in the patoot…
Well, we opted out of last night’s coven at the last minute. We couldn’t see the necessity for us, since we already have the ESA certificate. If the purpose was just to gripe about these fees, it would have been pointless, and I have enough issues with my blood pressure.
35F this morning and the weather dude keeps hinting about possible snow/slush, but it looks unlikely at 0800.
I see the wife has turned on the bedroom light, so time to get breakfast underway. If the avocado cooperates, we’ll have that on a pumpernickel bagel. If not, then salmon cream cheese.
Good morning.
It’s 41°F, dark, and cloudy. The expected daytime high is 50°F, and morning clouds will give way to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. The weather looks cooperative enough for a bike ride, but we’ll see how the cold is progressing for my husband first.
Nettie, I’m so sorry about Miss Allie.
VanGo, Maisie barks at anything and nothing.
There was a period of time when I was called up for jury duty every year for a number of years. However, it’s been many years since I’ve been called up. I served on a jury (sometimes two) every time I was called, and I do believe in the importance of jury duty. I was fortunate enough to continue receiving my regular paycheck while serving; many are not, and $ 10 a day doesn’t put food on the table.
I’ll have to get to the grocery store soonish to pick up a turkey. I resent the amount of space it’ll take up in my fridge, lol. I think I’ll head over early Friday morning, thus giving it plenty of defrost time in the refrigerator.
Nellie, that cake sounds delish. Years ago, I would make something called Orange-Rum-Yum Cake, and it was pretty tasty. Unfortunately, I lost the recipe, and all the how-tos are lost in the mists of time. The cake was quite popular at holiday potlucks.
If the bike ride doesn’t happen, I’ll fill the day with small chores around the house and then settle down to RDOSing.
Please take care of yourselves.
Morning all. Working on my Big Bowl O’Cereal with an apple for breaking my fast this morning, it’s 55F now and heading to 75F but there is a 50-50 chance for rain tonight, and that may start dropping the temperature. My E-mail password didn’t work, when I tried it on my phone it referenced ‘challenges.cloudfare’, which appears to be a major web security site that went down and affected a lot of the internet, apparently including me. Ah well, will wait awhile and try again.
The Invisible Mole conspiracy is spreading…
nellie, honey whiskey apple cakes sounds like words that don’t naturally go together, but I’ll take your word on their deliciousness.
Bright Tree, a sizable spider would mean a complete meltdown here, up to and including spraying the room with spider killer and leaving the house for several hours. Oh, have I mentioned I don’t like spiders?
swampy, I’ll have to do laundry before heading up to Brother’s for Thanksgiving, but probably not until Sunday or Moanday. Do have to sort it out, I have 4 baskets that I use to sort but I have been rather careless in my tossing lately.
FCM, glad the pets appear to be in a state of armed neutrality, hope it stays that way. And yay! for Roxy’s bike riding. I can still remember my first non-training wheel ride; my Dad was pacing me holding on to the seat and suddenly I looked back and he was yards away and I was doing it on my own! Guess it impressed me, I still remember it almost 65 years later.
Hippie, best wishes to Sunflower and you on a completely successful surgery. And finishing off a payment is always cause for celebration.
{{Sensei}}
One of these days, when I have the time and patience, I’ll have to tell you about the Great Texas/Columbian Thanksgiving turkey sale…
And that’s it for the morning report. Back later with more MMP stuff.
Mine has been in the fridge for a week - it’s still mostly frozen. I want to smoke it this week, so I guess it’ll go into a sink full of water. Then I can pull the other bird out of the freezer so it can thaw for next Thursday. Hope yours is more cooperative!
Have you tried searching on line? Maybe you’ll find something close enough?
I’ve broken down all the boxes for recycling (we had a bunch) and hauled pellets out to the shop. I even dumped a bag into the hopper. Then I put the garden cart away. Waiting for FCD to return before I can start on the doors - they’re in the back of his car. So I’m futzing around on my tablet.
The same tablet that popped up an ad saying they found 669 photos that were deleted 6 years ago and did I want to recover them. Um, but the tablet is like 3-4 years old. Is a puzzlement???
There are many recipes out there, and I’ve looked from time to time. I’m not sure any are THE recipe, though. I guess I could find out by making the various recipes, but that’s a whole lotta cake, and there are only two of us here. Besides, the husband is not a fan of booze infused cake or chocolate. I dunno, I might get a wild hair and try one of the recipes sometime. While I was still working, I could bring those kinds of things to work and share them with my co-workers. I don’t see enough people nowadays to do that.
It’s not world-ending.
Metal Mouse, I ran into that error while trying to open two different comics this morning. However, the rest of the interwebs has worked for me, so far.
Oh, absolutely. When I lived in Florida we didn’t need a fire for heating.
But every once in a while we would pile up the logs in the fireplace and have a good blaze. Then watch it settle down into a glorious glow. Very much a family get-together kind of thing.
Mind you when I grew up in the rural UK many years earlier, we didn’t have electricity, let alone central heat. The coal fire was a necessity then… anyone remember toasting forks, by the way?
Earlier today, I was thinking about two little boys I used to babysit when I was in college. Their dad was a fellow sailor/student. They have a relatively unusual name, so I googled and discovered their dad died 8 years ago. Kinda gets to you when your contemporaries die. He’d retired from the Navy as a LCDR after 23 years of service, then taught college for a while, but died at 66.
On the plus side, I found the FB pages of the boys (heh - the elder is in his 50s now) as well as their mom. So I sent her a message - we’ll see if anything comes of it.
There are some other people I’d like to Google, including two teachers I had major crushes on, but with names like Tom Miller and Don Wilson, I don’t hold out much hope. Especially since I worked with a Don Wilson and it definitely wasn’t the tennis coach from my high school
And there was one teacher I really liked (not a crush, just a good teacher) who had a decidedly unusual name, but it never came up - not for him or anyone else. Maybe I spelled it wrong?? My Google-fu failed me.
OK, FCD is done sanding. Time for me to get stripping (the door frames, you pervs!!!)
