Gather 'round the fire in the MMP

He always sleeps like that.

Evening all.

{{Nettie}}
I actually did write another post in last week’s MMP, but my laptop fan- which has been making noises for a little while- decided it was a good time to give up entirely mid-post. It has now been replaced allowing me to return to drivelling.

I actually got a woodburning stove fitted this summer; we had a coal fire when I was small (and no other heating), but just a gas one and central heating since then at my parents. I got a heat pump fitted a year back, which is a lot cheaper than the bizarre heating system that came with the house, but it’s not the best on really cold nights, or if we have a power cut. That’s my excuse anyway; really I just wanted to watch things burn and rather wood than the world.

We’ve actually had snow on the hills just out of town the last few days, and the water bucket I left out was frozen over this morning, so the woodstove’s been getting a bit of use. I just bought a couple of bare root apple trees online to plant as cordons for a winter gardening project, so I hope the ground doesn’t get too frozen before they arrive and get planted up. I think it’s due to get a little warmer again though.

I was loading 100 Middle White today. Just 2 cars, but one had 337 pieces, 4 bulk loads, including 21 boxes of Jungle paper(1092lbs total). And in the damages, I had to rebox a Mattress Inna Box, a 127lbs expensive Dell monitor(which only took a little brute force to shove it back in), and a return of 2 currancy couting machines from BofA to some guy. Returned because he had 2 machines in the box, and the slip in the box said only one counter per box will be accepted. Also, he tossed 2 somewhat expensive machines in a 22"x22"x22" box, with no packing whatsoever. If they weren’t non-functional before, they sure are now.

A good hit of LSD will do the same thing, without the cleanup afterwards.

Nothing satisfies the schadenfreude like seeing how bloated and deathly like the people who were mean to you in school are.

TIL that you can spend that much on a door…

About the best you can hope for.

Yes(assuming he wears it, and doesn’t go full FCD and loses a toe to frostbite)

My first bike was too big for me. I was in 4th grade and they bought me a 26" bike. No help from parents; I was on my own in the front yard, where there was a slight incline in the grass. I’d push off, coast a bit and fall down. Rinse and repeat for hours. Unknown to me were the people in the apartment building across from us who were rooting for me. On the day I finally managed to stay upright, my mother got several calls from them expressing their admiration for my persistence.

Front doors are expensive.

It’s a double door, which is pricier. If we replaced it with a single door with sidelights, it would “only” be $6-8k.

We have a double door also. But it’s solid wood - a vintage entry! One of these days I’m going to paint it. I’ve been saying that for, oh, 10 years???

Some day.

Oh, what good kitties!

You are a most excellent friend, thank you so much! That indeed was my base recipe and now I know what I was doing wrong with the others. I was messing around with the sugar, butter and cocoa, when it was the FOUR eggs that was missing.

Happily I now have a nursing home buddy who is more than willing to take my extra cookies off my hands so I’ll be baking tomorrow.

I went to the post office and mailed off my last packages so that’s over thank goodness. Now that USPS is so expensive, I’ve started having gifts shipped from the company (usually UPS) to the recipient. For the most part, that’s been less expensive and much less bother.

We need a new back door, our current one is warped from decades of direct afternoon sun. Now that I know what such a thing will cost, I’m thinking nobody sees it so a coat of paint and some weather striping should do the trick.

Its been wet and gloomy all day and while I’d usually spend the time stitching, today I pulled up Diablo II and got a mage going. Battlenet has been nerfing all of the games lately. I really noticed it with IV, we played in the test realm for a while and got our asses handed to us. When the OG version came out, we go our butts handed to us again. Now we just walk through it.

Now it seems as though they are going back and nerfing the old games and there is no reason for it. There are game levels and folks who want to just relax and play need to stick with the easy levels and not mess with those of us who want to raise our blood pressure once in a while.

Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with playing on the easy levels, I do it on a regular basis, but some folks play for the excitement and tension.

What a lovely thing dicey was able to do for you!! My smile still hasn’t worn off. I know how I hate to lose a special recipe and cookies are my very favorite baked goodies.

And a good early evening to all. Did some work at the gym (with a goodly amount of rest in-between reps) and had soup and sammich when I got home. Will have a little more nibbles before bedtime but feeling full right now. Need to get the garbage and recyclables out to the curb here in a bit for pickup tomorrow, so that should complete my grown-up stuff for the day and the rest of the evening will be spent in RDOS-mode. Temperature is 64F outside and due to reach 75F tomorrow, so the power bill will stay modest through December.

And only 18 messages to scroll through tonight, you folks are making it easy on me…

Pavo, echoing other folks, that must be one impressive door, I think I paid around $600-$800 for my new front door several years ago.

((Coppertone}}, hope your Dr. helped on the blood mystery.

rocky, hope you live long enough to see the improvements on the streets…

FCM, long as you have that boat…and dog…and grandkids…and husband, you will not need to join a gym for exercise, that’s for sure…

Dicey, and a hearty Yo-Ho-Ho to that rum cake joke. And two years for an eye follow-up is pretty good.

doggio, those were 52lb boxes, hope the delivery person has a strong back.

JtC, might do some looking around at doors, most lumber places like Lowes or Home Depot have them at lower costs. Enjoy cookie-making!

And the garbage is not getting to the curb by teleportation, need to head out and get’er done. See y’all later.

JtC I love those cookies. When I was a lad I made them frequently. Mom still makes the, as part of the xmas cookie collection. Yeah, the cooling in the fridge part is important.

Tomorrow is another long day. Prolly 8:30-8:30. We’ve got a school group coming to play with prototypes in the evening. I’m really holping to get my ping pong ball flying machine working. I need to get the Archimedes screw to function properly, but it is proving to be a bear. Were can I find a 15mm drill bit?

A quick check with Google says Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Harbor Freight should all have something suitable.

Yeah. Pretty sure the estrogen inserts a week and a half ago was too much.
Wondered why I was bloated.
Now I want cookies. Oatmeal chocolate chip.

Dicey, as I understand “face cord,” it’s what we call a rick of firewood around here. In other words, the front dimensions of a cord, but only one log deep.

Coffee is very spendy these days, and Mrs. Nott was delighted when the store had a sale on several kinds of flavored coffee today. Gingerbread, cinnamon, nutty caramel, and white chocolate peppermint, all for half price. Cha-ching!

Same in these parts. Full cord is 4’ x 4’ x 8’, if I remember right.

We have a traditional fireplace (no gas, just wood, ash built in) and yes, the fireplace is warmth, but mostly comfort. We don’t necessarily sit in front of it and stare into the flames, but we do tend to relax more when there’s a good fire going. I usually buy a half cord (or face cord, never heard that term, but I like it) from a youth charity each year. It’s green-ish wood, so this year I’m burning last year’s half cord, etc. etc.

Howdy Y’all! We procured and stowed provisions. With any luck there will be no need to go to the sto’ next week. I may have just made a funny. RDOS inactivities then ensued. Sup was cottage pie (ground moo instead of ground baa), sallit, rolls and apple crisp with spray pseudo whipped cream. ‘Twas very tasty! A fun discussion of the catechism followed. What? I am a church nerd. Now I shall see whatup on teh intartoobz.

Oh hell, I think I forgot to mention this. There was a message in our mailbox this morning saying that effective immediately, the executive director (the bitch who wanted to charge us to have a pet) had resigned, effective immediately! No explanation, just. . .gone! So ding dong the bitch is gone, and the crowd goes wild.

If there was a Home Depot local, I would be boycotting them due to their cooperation with ICE. I’m with you, though. I’m sure I can get a door for less money at Lowes or a local building supply store but what we have works, it just isn’t pretty so it is way down on my list of things I want to have done.

Currently I’m taking wood putty to all of the door jams because the lady who lived here before didn’t know how to drive her walker. It is nice trim and can’t be replaced easily nowadays so its better to repair it and then repaint.

I do enjoy baking and I really enjoy knowing that people like what I’ve made. Now that I have the original recipe, I can almost see the notes in my head so I know what I was doing last time. Kinda.

It would have taken me years to figure out to add more eggs, though. I just do not have that much science left in me anymore.

Do you heat your entire house or just use a space heater in your office? I’m trying to figure out what is more efficient. I know that HVAC systems are more efficient than space heaters but that’s for an entire house and I only want to heat one room. Hubs would be happy if I left the temp down around 70F but I wouldn’t be able to stitch because my finger would be numb from the cold. I’m still cogitating over it.

You are very right about them needing to be cooled overnight. I once tried to skip that step. It didn’t work very well.

That’s a long day. Is Miss Peach OK with being left alone that long? I hope you get your balls flying soon, your fans are waiting!

Holy cow, it sure is! We have kin who own a coffee shop and they are just barely holding on this year. Expenses (supplies and rent) have gone up and their customers are poorer than last year.

I’m glad Mrs. Nott got all of the good stuff for half off, what a deal!

Well, hurray! Maybe that meeting did have results after all.

You might be tempting fate just a little bit there.

Ucch. I went to a writers’ group meeting at a restaurant. The sign with its name was unilluminated in the dark. The place didn’t smell good, the lights were dim, and the group leader didn’t show up. The 2nd in command didn’t do some announcements she ought to have done, and the food was the worst I’ve ever had (and I’ve eaten at VA hospital cafeterias). Other people were pushing their own plates o’ glop away. I feigned getting a text and went to the register to pay. The hostess was annoyed that I had a credit card, not cash or debit. I just stood there until she rang me out on my card. Went back into the room, where 2nd in charge was introducing the speaker, 10 minutes late. I made the “apology” face and grabbed my bag and scuttled out. Still recovering from the few spoonfuls of soup I manfully choked down.
