Gay Rutgers Student tragedy. What about the other victim?

They’ve reported a lot about the Gay Rutgers Student that got secretly put on a web cam by his roommate. I’m glad the authorities are pursuing serious charges.

What about the other victim? Was he another student or male hooker? I hope they are getting him counseling. Getting viewed on a web cam and having all this publicity must be putting a lot of pressure on him. Even more than the kid that killed himself. They need to watch and make sure another tragedy doesn’t come out of this.

Seems like the press is ignoring the other victim in this story.

There are more options than ‘other student’ or ‘male hooker.’ He could have been an older man, already out, who wasn’t as upset by the actions - after all, it wasn’t his room-mate that he had to see every day and night.

Or it could be that he’s not out and really wouldn’t appreciate being talked about in the media.

If no one knows who he is, he isn’t getting any publicity, and he’s not much of a victim, right? I may be wrong, but the video in question hasn’t been distributed to the public.

Victim may not be the right word, but the poor fellow may well be in a bad way. His lover just died, after all. People tend to respond poorly to that.

That might or might not be the case, but the OP asked about pressure resulting from publicity. It seems to me that whoever he is, his identity has been pretty well concealed so far.

Hopefully the web stream wasn’t captured by anyone except the roommate. His computer has already been confiscated by the cops.

Never know with web cams if anyone is bothering to record it. There’s 100’s of thousands of web cams out there now. So many, that most are ignored.

I’ve been thinking back to my college days. If my roommate set up a camcorder (yes they did have camcorders in 1983 :wink: )without my knowledge I’d be mortified. If that tape got circulated around school the embarrassment for me and the girl would be intense. If the girl killed herself over it? :eek:

You bet that would haunt me the rest of my life. Even a casual one night stand. To think someone you were with (even briefly) killed themselves would be personally devastating. You’d wonder what could have been done differently. Maybe reach out to the girl before she did something.

That’s why I asked about the other Rutgers victim. He is a victim of the horrible consequences of a hateful event. I hope the school got him counseling.

I didn’t think they were actually having sex. All the news stories I’ve seen have said “intimate activity.” (I guess maybe it depends on your definition of “lover.” But I’d gotten the impression that it was a first date, not a longstanding relationship.) Not that the guy couldn’t still be traumatized by the whole thing.

I’ve been thinking about that guy too. The cynical side of me says that when all of this begins to die down, he’ll surface and write a book or something. He’ll sit on Oprah’s couch for a while.

I’ve been wondering about him, too. I’ve been assuming that he’s a student as well, since that’s who most freshmen hook up with. I think it’s appropriate that the media hasn’t made his identity public, and from what I’ve heard, there’s no evidence that anyone saw the video feed other than the roommate and his friend who streamed it. Still, what a horrible thing to happen to anyone. I, too, hope he’s getting counseling if he needs it.

My bet is that the authorities are keeping him under wraps for trial.

If the student hadn’t committed suicide afterwards, none of us probably would have heard about it.

While illegal, stupid and demoralizing, being taped having sex without your knowledge is not newsworthy unless you are a celebrity.
