At my gym, guys wander the men’s locker room naked all the time and no-one thinks twice about it; the showers are all communal, there is a whirlpool, etc. Mind you, we are mostly older business-type fellows anyway. Not a crowd likely to spark lust, unless the sight of sagging folds of skin is a turn-on. 
That’s pretty much what it’s like at the Y, but with a very diverse clientele (age,race, socio-economic class etc.). We also have both communal showers and a stalls with curtains, and in the change area there is also change stall with a curtain for the bashful. I don’t recall ever seeing anyone use it.
I just don’t remember if there was as much nudity at my old gym. Without the sauna and stuff, I don’t think anyone stayed around the change area much, so I kind of think it was all very “get in, change, get out”. And the showers were set up more like the shower rooms you’d find at a campground, where people bring their clothes over to hooks and benches right next to the shower stalls. So you can change behind the shower curtain if you want to. I don’t think there was much coming and going wearing just a towel, but I may be misremembering.
I’m a sraight male but I suppose if I was gay I would probably look. I like to think I’d try to be subtle about though. There are a lot of websites out there that cater to that kind of fetish (at least for guys) and we’ve already had a couple people in this thread say that they do. So I don’t have any problem believing that it actually does happen to some degree. Remember the Seinfeld episode where (I think it was Kramer) says this is the first time Jerry, George, and Kramer have been in the lockerroom together. Kramer, of course asks and admits to “sneaking a peek.” Jerrys says “no,” while George admits to sneaking a peek.
I didn’t say it was unheard of, I said it was rare. If you’re seeing maybe one or two nudes in the locker room (and I have to say I’m skeptical about this “always” being the case, unless you’re counting people who are only nude for a few seconds) then that means the vast majority of women in the locker room aren’t hanging around nude.
I’m not trying to pick a fight here. I only go to the gym at night (b/t 10pm & midnight) when the amount of people I see in the locker room ranges from 0 to 4. Usually at least one of them will be walking around completely nude. Sure, it’s not a majority, but it’s not like it’s 1 out of 25 either.
If it’s different during peak times, I have no idea. I am only going by what I actually see.

I think this pretty much it for me. Nudity wasn’t taboo in my family growing up - I’ve seen both my parents casually nude hundreds of times and then there were all the National Geographics lying around… then I grew up to be bisexual and I’ve seen all my female friends (who are mostly conventionally attractive, but I just don’t think of them like that) starkers. It’s just not sexual unless it’s someone I want to have sex with (rare).
I can’t say I make a point of not looking at people’s bodies, nude or not, I do look plenty. But it’s not sexually stimulating.
So all the Craig’s List mfm gym encounters are fake, hm? Okay, I’m half kidding, but I know gay guys who hook up at the gym (and no, that’s not code for the sauna). Not in the locker rooms, obviously, but in the washrooms and steam room. So it’s not unheard of.
It depends on the atmosphere of the facility. There are ALWAYS women walking around in the nude in the change area of my new gym. No and, ifs, or buts (well, butts) about it. Always. It is not at all unusual and not for a mere “few seconds” either. There is a jacuzzi/whirlpool that accommodates up to nine people and only on the rarest occasions have I ever seen anyone in a bathing suit use it. Bathers are usually nude. In the sauna women lie or sit ON their towels, although in the steam room you’re more likely to see women with towels wrapped around their lower half, I’m not sure why there’s that discrepancy. I’d say a good half of the women don’t take advantage of the shower stalls and just use the open shower, but it may be because there are stools in the open shower area so you can prop up your leg to shave. In the locker area, women often dry and style their hair in the buff. Women come and go from the steam/sauna/shower area fully nude most of the time.
I have a “Members Plus” membership, so we also have a lounge with couches, TV, magazines, and free coffee and tea. You’ll often see women in there only wrapped in towels. No outright nudity there, but towel-only is common. It has a very spa-like atmosphere. I would say if I’m standing in front of my locker, at the very least half of the people around me are fully nude and not in a particular rush to change that either. For example, there is a woman whose locker is near mine and I don’t recall ever seeing her clothed. She’s so slow to get ready, that I come back from my shower, towel off, get dressed, dry my hair, and she’s still polishing her toe-nails, bare assed. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’e seen her working out ever, either. She’s usually languishing in the sauna.
My old gym was a women-only gym. I went there due to price and proximity, not because I cared about the women-only space. I never once saw anyone nude there, ever. It was like high school - girls were changing their bras without taking their shirts off, and id that technical manoeuvre where you get your arms into your fresh shirt, which is held in front of you, so you can peel your sweaty shirt off while slipping the new one on in one, deft move so you’re never topless!
What – people SHAVE at the gym? (I don’t know, I’ve never joined a gym!) What’s the point of doing it there?
For the record, I’m straight and incredibly self-conscious of being naked in public. Mostly for vanity reasons. NOT because I’m afraid of lesbians checking me out.
When I was in high school and we used to swim at the local pool, we’d wear our bathing suits TO the pool, shower and wash our hair in our suits (to get the chlorine out), and then change in the stalls. It was pretty rare for anyone to even GET naked out in the open, even in the showers. Most people were just interested in washing their hair.
I will say one thing – if you’re at the gym, ladies (and gentlemen), please wear flipflops, even if you’re starkers. I caught a nasty-case of Plantar warts when I was sixteen from going barefoot in the pool locker rooms. Trust me, athlete’s foot is a picnic compared to this.
I can’t understand why anyone would want to spend so much time in a gym lockerroom. Shaving, painting toenails, styling their hair? The lockerroom at my gym is nice and clean and everything, and I have few, if any, hangups about being seen naked by anyone, but it’s the last place I would want to take my time getting ready. I can get undressed, shower, dry and dress in under ten minutes, then leave and go about my day. Don’t these women have anything better to do with themselves?
Can’t speak for women and their legs, but I really don’t see a point in doing my daily ablutions twice. Shaving goes along with my morning shower-shave-fix-hair routine. I have to shower and fix my hair after my workout because I sweat like a hog in high summer, so I shave then too. Makes me feel all squeaky clean.
It would be the same for women, I expect. Most women shave their legs in the shower or bath, right? So it’s not like they are going to shower just to shave their legs if they just have to shower all over again after they work out.

Nah (I’m bisexual but lean towards gay). I can’t say it never will, but mostly the following applies
-there aren’t that many naked people around anyway, due to cubicles
-those that are I’m probably not going to find attractive (just because of the laws of probability)
-I’m conscious enough of the weirdness of the situation to avoid even catching their eye, never mind looking them up and down, even though if they’re confident enough to be naked they probably couldn’t care less
I never go to the gym btw; this is my experience from swimming pools. Maybe there are more naked people in gym changing rooms.
Bi but mostly lesbian here. I don’t remember about locker room stuff, as I’ve pretty much blocked out high school. I remember at camp in the cabins girls were pretty discreet.
But hangs head ashamed I do remember watching a counselor I had an ENOURMOUS crush on change, when she came in at nite. (this was right after I realized I was gay) At the time I didn’t think anything of it, but now…:eek:!
