What ever happened to General Douglas MacArthur’s only son, Arthur? I know he wasn’t a military man, and was more interested in the arts like his mother. But all of the biographies of the general barely mention the son. He was born in '38, so is he still alive or what?? And if he is, what’s he doing now?
With a name like Arthur MacArthur? Probably getting beaten up
Apparently he is living in the New York area under an assumed name. If my name were Arthur MacArthur, I’d change it too. See this cached page from Google
For the record, Douglas MacArthur’s father’s name was also Arthur MacArthur.
I once asked the same question, although I can’t remember the forum. I didn’t get any useful replies that I recall.
I believe that William Manchester in American Caesar says something like “he faded into the New York music scene”. This was in the 50s or 60s. That’s the last he mentions him.
I have a guess as to the reason for the lack of info, but since this is GQ, I’m going to resist giving it.
Perhaps he just “faded away”.
I thought this was the old trick question, “what did General MacArthur’s son do?”
Answer: He became a general, too.
Arthur MacArthur was named after his grandfather, who was the first military governor of the Philippines. If I remember right, Arthur and Doug are the only father-and-son Medal of Honor winners.
SofaKing is right about MacArthur father and son being the only father and son to recieve the Medal of Honor. I, however, have no idea what General MacArthur’s son did at all.
Here’s an obituary for Douglas MacArthur’s wife:

She died a year ago at the age of 101. The article just says that she was survived by her son Arthur, who lives in New York City.
