He wasn’t especially handsome and Venus never wanted to marry him. He bought her from Jupiter with (I can’t remember what). Vulcan was also had at least one crippled leg.
According to Wikipedia, Venus was a payoff from Jupiter to free Juno from a trick chair. However, the article also says that Vulcan was Jupiter’s weapons dealer: he forged the thunderbolts.
