Geneology

I am new to this Message board so forgive my ignorance as I learn it.

I have recently been passed the Geneology of my family tree. on both sides of my parents and their parents. I have trying to find a software out there that can be exported to HTML. & is user friendly.

I am trying to post all this information on a private secure page of my own. Only allowing people with the password to see anything on the tree.

If anyone could help me I would be very very grateful.

~Respectfully

Try Geni.com - it is very user friendly. You can export in GEDCOM 6.0 format*, which is XML specific to geneology.

Geni has extensive security controls, so you can have restrictions on who sees what.

*Geni is free, but I think the 6.0 export requires the non-free version.

You can Google GEDCOM to HTML to find a large range of programs that do what you want. You might find some are more to your preference than others. Years ago I used GedHTree and it was sufficient, though it does generate very “early web”-looking pages. This seems to be common amongst GED to HTML converters.

GEDCOM is a standard format that most family tree programs export and import. It allows different researchers to share information despite using different software. You should be able to export GEDCOM from whatever genealogy software package you’re using now. Some will allow privacy filtering such as “Exclude all information for living people under the age of 100” at the GEDCOM-export end - if this is the case, you won’t need to look for that feature at the HTML generator end.

I’m quite partial to Legacy Family Tree. I use the paid version, but I’m pretty sure the free version also does some of what you’re looking for.

You can use Personal Ancestral File (PAF). It’s free from here. You have to give an email, but not once have I gotten anything from them. It’s easy to use and will make an OK web page.

You can also get Roots Magic which will make a web page as well, but it costs $30 or so. I’ve used Family Tree Maker, and I think it does web pages, but I don’t think it’s as easy to use and not as good as some of the other ones.

BTW it’s spelled Genealogy. Though a lot of people use the o and not the a.

K364, what programs use GEDCOM 6.0? The latest I know of is 5.5.

Hey, what the fuck is this, there’s a monkey at the top of my family tree, how do I get him off there?

Hmmm… You are probably correct. I did a quick search when I posted that and got this: http://forum.geni.com/topic.php?id=125

There is a reference to 6.0, but I can’t see where Geni supports it, either in the free or the Pro version. It probably was never implemented. And Wikipediasuggests that 6.0 was a draft and “Was not a complete specification and recommended not to begin to implement in their software.”
