Genetic Engineering

Hey everybody… I hafta do a debate on genetic engineering for class and i wanna know what you think to help me out. I’m on the affirmative side so if you think it’s bad, give me a reason… thanks much

Let me play devil’s advocate here.

Genetic engineering bad? What could be some possible reasons?

With nature’s evolutionary process, organisms must go a “weeding-out” process to determine their actual survival value and place in the biosphere. With human beings manipulating the genome, we can create organisms that would have no natural predator and thus would proliferate uncontrollably until a natural predator evolved.

Crops raised by farmers already suffer from a lack of genetic diversity, so a disease that can affect one strain of corn (for example) could easily affect corn in a very large area. This is not necessarily related to genetic engineering, but companies that produce genetically engineered plants would presumably advertise them and perhaps reinforce the trend of a reduction in “species” variety.

Another concern: when a private company produces a genetically-engineered organism, in their rush to recap their costs they might insufficiently test their “creation” and release something that would be dangerous to the public and introduce new diseases.

(That’s just off the top of my head, I’ll let the specialists expand upon/correct my statements.)

Arnold… Think high school

Gotcha! let me think back to high school…

What if through genetic engineering scientists created a contagious “love bug” of such potency that, once unleashed, it would cause teenagers to start thinking of nothing but sex and totally ignore their studies? That would mark the end of humanity as we know it!
