I’m still at it. SWMBO and I snagged seven more (6 GCs and 1 TC) on Memorial Day, out in the College Station/Brenham/Hempstead area of Texas.
I have the Garmin eTrexLegend. Not bottom of the line but close to it. It came with a handy data cable that can attach to no computer that I own, shrug. I just plug in cache co-ordinates by hand. And there’s no way I’m going to pay money for maps, so it’s a pretty bare bones setup but it keeps me happy.
My Garmin GPSmap76s came with an RS232 cable but it was easy enough to buy a USB-to-RS232 adapter cable. Makes downloading way points much easier especially if your downloading 100 at a time. When we go away on holidays I like to load up on caches just in case I get the time to go looking. Though the opportunity hardly ever arises I still like to have the GPSr loaded just in case.
I’ll add that if you are halfway serious about caching, you should be using GSAK . One of the best utilities I have seen for caching. I can export caches to my GPSr and my Palm, thereby eliminating the need for hardcopies of the cache listings.
Wow, I just created an account and there are 3 caches within 1500 feet of my apartment! Might have to go see if I can find them.
Has anyone here ever found anything valuable or particularly interesting in a cache?
I finally went online to see if there were any caches nearby to look for. I figured the chances were slim in central WI. I was wrong. There’s 3 within walking distance of my house and about 15 in the immediate area.
Now, I just gotta find a good GPS.
Nowadays, with Google Maps, lots of folks don’t even bother with the GPS. You might want to just study the clues and satellite images and see if you can’t find the cache without a GPS.
that may be, but I’m kind of a tech nerd and I’ve wanted a GPS for awhile now. I’ve never had an actual reason to buy one other than to just play with it and bask in its techyness.
Now I have an excuse to buy one
WooHoo! I found my first cache last night! I’m hooked.
I’m off to Boston today and I’ve already downloaded about 10 caches close to my hotel. I don’t have anything to do on Monday so I’ll be combing the streets of Boston for caches.
So which model GPS did you end up getting?
Like enipla, I also have a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx…and I do geocache with it. I basically use geocaching.com and download using GSAK software directly from the computer to my GPS. Lots of fun, especially when going with another couple!
I got the Garmin ETrex Legend. Pretty inexpensive and had all the features I wanted. It has a cable that directly downloades caches from the site, so that saves a lot of time.
I found 4 out of the 6 caches that I went looking for in Boston. It looks like the two I didn’t find had been muggled before I got to them.
This Geocaching thing is great. There are parts of Boston I wouldn’t have seen had I not been out looking for caches.
I’ve been caching since early '04. Currently I’m using a Garmin eTrex LegendCX which I love. There are a lot of great caches and cachers in the Chicago area. I’ve placed a few myself, but I’m especially proud of my Notorious Chicago series which brings urban hunters to the sites of some of Chicago’s darker history (Valentine’s Day Massacre, the Biograph Theatre where Dillinger was shot).
Anyway, glad to see so many active cachers on the SDMB. If anyone cares to look me up on Geocaching.com, I’m HelloNinja there as well.
