Geography of Danger Levels for US Soldiers in Iraq?

My wife’s brother joined the Army. He’s a medic. He’s just learned he’s going to Iraq in a few months. He’s going to be stationed in a prison hospital on the border with Kuwait.

My question is, is there any correspondence between levels of risk for soldiers in Iraq and the location at which they are stationed?

I ask in hopes of finding some info that might comfort my wife. Her brother’s decision to join was probably good for him, for various complicated reasons, but it has made no one else in his family happy as you can imagine.

Some but not much.

First off, there is not a lot to prevent a person sent to one place from being sent to another. More to the point, the nature of an insurgency is that while some places are more dangerous than others, few if any places are safe.

This site has a lot of info on Iraq casaulties, including by province:

As Paul said, he won’t have much control about what they do with him when he gets in, but there are certainly areas that are much safer than others.

Edit: If you are trying to comfort someone, you probably not send the link, just describe the contents.

Come on Paul, you are overstating it. No place is guaranteed to be safe but some places are much safer than others. How many Air Force casualties at the airport? How many casualties in Kuwait?
