"Geordie" and "Ahlya": male or female?

One of my favourite pipe tunes: The Mucking of Geordie’s Byre.

One explanation for the nickname is that it dates back to the time of the Hanoverians. Those supporting James III/VII Stuart were “Jacobites”; those supporting George I of Hanover were Geordies.

Of course, as in all matters of folklore/etymology, there are alternative explanations, as the linked page indicates.

Ahlya is an Arabic girl’s name, derived from ahl ‘people, family’. It should be spelled Ahlîyah or Ahliyyah and the accent is on the second of the three syllables.

Or else it might be a misspelling of another Arabic girl’s name ‘Âliyah, which means ‘high’, the feminine equivalent of Arabic ‘Alî or Hebrew Eli. (Come to think of it, this is a more likely girl’s name than my first guess.) Remember in Frank Herbert’s Dune? Princess Alia-of-the-Knife! The main Jordanian airport is named Queen Alia International Airport. There was also a pop singer Aliyah who died in a tragic plane crash a couple years ago.
