A Segway is very easy to use, but it is also pretty awkward the first time you’re on one, or so I’m told. I haven’t been on one myself, but several friends have.
One did manage to fall off and another rode it straight into a wall. Neither of these people come close to qualifying as one of the stupidest people in the world.
The stupidest person in the world was my sister who drove a car into a house and claimed she had her foot on the brake the whole time.
I find the Bush/Segway pictures to be worth an Evil Chuckle™ or two, but certainly not something I’d bring up when criticizing the man’s policies or character shortcomings. Primus knows, there’s plenty of other examples for that other stuff…
It saves bandwidth on my computer. And yours. And everyone elses.
I’ve been on boards with the IMG tag enabled. Any idea what a dogs dinner they can end up looking? And how long it takes to download a thread when it’s hitting 30 different websites, some that’d make the SDMB look like lightning, for 30 different oversized and pointles jpegs?
Lets just say the SDMB is slow enough with out them. 
It is possible to crash them - I’ve seen a video of someone doing a faceplant 5 seconds after the instructor said “you can’t fall over”. I dislike Bush’s actions as much as anyone, but flipping off a Segway isn’t that boneheaded.
There are plenty of fast, free servers that will host your pics, but…
When you allow users to post linked pics, what inevitably happens is someone posts 12 pics of his very special puppy and 15 other users then use the quote feature throughout the thread. Suddenly you find you are spending your day scrolling and scrolling and scrolling.
It’s much better this way, IMHO. Cleaner. It’s pretty rare to see someone link to an image on a porn server. (That isn’t porn, anyway)
Oh, and I’m glad they don’t allow avatars here either. And images in sigs too. Very annoying those are.

OK, so it might make my personal server squeal in agony, it destroys the SDMB experience for folks on dialup, and it clutters up the screen, resulting in a much poorer message board experience. All good reasons for no images.
But I’m correct that using offsite images doesn’t do a damned thing with regard to the SDMB hamsters, right? I just want to be sure I’m not insane over here, and that my understanding of how this intarweb thingy works is correct.

Not yours, the one on which the images are hosted, which might not make the SDMB overly popular with the owners and/or clients of those servers. But yes, as Futile Gesture said, if your browser is downloading tons of pointless images from all over the web, it’s likely to make your surfing experience super-duper slow. That’s probably the best reason not to allow the images.
And yes, you’re correct in surmising that it would have little to no effect on the “hamsters” of the SDMB’s server.
