Not a big deal to non-Redskins fans but this guy was pretty huge for a long time and still had excellent ratings. Times are changing.

ESPN’s Sports Center owes a HUGE debt to George Michael and his Sports Machine. Back in the 80’s, when very few people had cable (relatively speaking), and ESPN was a fledgling network, lots and LOTS of people would tune in on Sunday nights to watch replays from the NFL games on the Sports Machine. It branched out from there. I’m sad to hear that he’s “homeless” as it were. 
I watched him very late Sunday nights until he went off the air (what, last year?)
Definitely a pioneer in the sports world. Should be a member of some (if not, all) sports halls of fame.
