Kickass Younger Sister is a personal favorite. I suspect that her coin has bought passage to a place she does not suspect.
The Deformed Brainy Guy is another favorite. His treatment of Fink-Girl, and his treatment by Fink-Girl made me want to weep. His Oedipal moment made me want to cheer. And I sincerely hope he gave the Giant Kisser full payment.
Ugly swordsman & ugly swordswoman both made strong showings, but I think the real tribute to GRRM is that I found myself believing in the transformation of Lefty. It takes true skill to pull off something like that.
I’m not really a fan of Suckler of Dragons or the Fat Fighter. I’d like to see A Man apologize to them both.
Mother of the Groom (shouldn’t that be Sister of the Groom?) is (was?) an incredibly well-devloped character, though I found her only slightly less annoying than her sister. That gap is the difference between tragedy and morality play.
Half-brother is too good to be true. And Tubby Friend is too disguised-good to be true. Everyone is guessing who mother is, but is anyone asking who father is? (Am I my father’s nephew?)
I like the frogs. I loathe (as is proper) the Leech Lords. I have a guilty sympathy for Squid Boy (and Squid Girl, teaser of incest), but after all the kings and lords and dragons and direwolves are added together, it’s the Knuckle Hand who carries my deepest sympathies.
Man–how many years till I can see how it all ends? I’ll never make it!
No…the groom in question is the one who ended up with the wolf’s ears after the wedding in the third book. Mother of the Groom’s sister is “I wanna see him FLY!”'s mom. Are we talking about the same character?
Who do I despise the most in this series? It’s miss “I-FUCKED-EVERYONE-UP-BY-KIDNAPPING-QUASIMODO-AND-FREEING-LEFTY-I-ALWAYS-THINK-WITH-MY-FEELINGS-AND-THOSE-ARE-DUMBER-THEN-A-COLOSTOMY-BAG”. Man, I can’t believe how many people she screwed by not thinking a little farther then the moment.
Regarding some of the bad guy’s who have died… well, somehow, their death’s just didn’t seem very satisfying. I mean, I know they’re dead and gone for good but geez! They didn’t really suffer at all! Grrr… seems like they got off easy.
How could I have forgotten either of those pairs! The Squids and the Frogs are definitely among my favorite characters as well. When wind is blowing across everyone else’s graves, the Frogsketeers will take over the world. Quick, observant, wise beyond their years. I would be like either of them if I could. Not to mention their uncanny senses…
And I gotta love the Squids’ attitude. They are definitely some of the ballsiest and funniest characters in the series.
After glancing at this thread (I know better, really and truly I do…), I ran out at lunchtime and bought Storm of Swords. I was planning on waiting till it came out in paperback, but this thread piqued my curiosity so much that I couldn’t wait. So the hardcover is sitting in my backpack, patiently awaiting the train ride home from work.
(And thanks, y’all, for not posting spoilers.)
(BTW, Fenris, glad to find someone else who’s an Exile fan. Julian May absolutely kills me – that’s some of the most intelligent writing I’ve ever read!)
