Mr. 'addi and I are all set to make an offer on a home in Georgia. We were doing our financial homework tonight and stumbled onto this nasty little Georgia state tax – not just on your car, but on everything you own. Presumably you’ve paid sales tax on whatever-it-is once already and yet this thing is levied each and every year.
So, how does it work? Do the Revenue Boys™ show up at the door? Must I calculate the value of the corn cob pitcher handed down from my Great Aunt Liddie? Will they need to know the value of my decrepit computer? My 15 boxes of warped LPs? Our 20 year old couch? The dog?
What’s up with this?
It’s only a property tax on your home, similar to the taxes levied by many other states. Here - check it out. I know my mother pays it in two installments at the end of the year.
Ad Velorum taxes are mostly known for car tag taxes. You reclaim it on your income taxes for the year.
Thanks, Time Like Tears. Man, talk about small print. I guess I’m trying to find out how the tax is asessed. I’ve been all over that site and, I’m still, well…

Here are two more semi-helpful links. Obviously, the tax differs from county to county in Georgia.

You can probably find more about the tax just by googling (but I’m sure you already knew that and have probably already been down that road).
Good luck!
